Default both are outstanding

the first really caught my eye on first viewing, but I may actually prefer the second, though it lacks the dramatic capture of the first
that wistful look of the dog & your perfect composition work to elevate the second photograph
fine captures both
I am jealous

Indeed, both are equally enjoyable in their own way. The light makes it hard to distinguish between land, sea and sky... which really sends the eye to the silhouetted subjects. They look like photos that were fun to take!

I agree
the dynamic nature of the first really catches the eye, but the quiet waiting of the second is huge.
Well seen and captured!

Thank you all for your kind words. I wasn't planning on shooting that day, but drove past the beach and knew it was the kind of light that the D1 enjoys. So I took the camera on a little walk and got lucky with the dog.

Daniel, these are all wonderful images. I would hang the second one on my wall, simply great tonality, composition and simplicity. Hatts off.

Mehmet

DD,

Like the first one. Pull that D1 out more often!

Will be in Ojai from Wednesday to Saturday this week to be "reprogrammed". What should I pack? It's -2 C here in NJ with ice and snow everywhere.

Marvellous compositions, light, tonality, subject matter.
It's hard to make a choice, so I vote for both.
Nice to see you posting again, Dan.

Dan,
That first one is really good, imho. I find the human/dog overlap in #2 compromises the shot somewhat. in #1 the position in which you have caught the dog in mid-leap and the splashes from it's feet are really effective. Great atmospheric conditions too!

Thanks again for all the additional comments. They are much appreciated.
William, our forecast in Santa Cruz from Wednesday on is sunny and upper '60's. Ojai should be similar--maybe a few degrees warmer during the day. I think you'll enjoy the trip.

DD -

When you return you really return! So many fine images in such a short space of time. These are superb, and all the more so for their nearly monochome glow. Excellent.

Daniel,

I agree with Mehmet Bey. I would hang the second one on my wall. Great photograph. 19th century painting quality.

Thanks for sharing.
