X vario vs T JPEG Engine

HI,

It's my understanding that the T and X Vario share the same Sony sensor, the T sans AA filter.. How similar are the OOC Jpegs in terms of color and contrast?

I'm especially interested in the way blues are rendered in the photos at this site; Minimally Minimal

Apparently the photos at minimallyminimal are virtually OOC Jpegs with little if any PP.

Could you acheive the same look with the Vario JPEGS? or has Leica tweaked the JPEG engines of both cameras to alter the JPEG output?..

I would appreciate any feedback, i'm considering a purchase of either of these two camera's and primarily like to work with JPEGs (thats just me :) )

cheers!

Darrel.

.... well that is really a matter of semantics ....... they are DNG's with the PP done in the camera to produce a JPEG........

The only difference I have noticed in the DNG output is the fact that the XV files need a fair bit more sharpening ..... which fits with the AA filter differences.

I think you will find very few people on this forum who use JPG output exclusively .... and remarkably few that have both a T and an XV.

Leica configure their cameras to give a fairly uniform Leica 'look' throughout the range, so I would be surprised if there is much difference.

I have a T and XV ........ and unless you are intending to use manual Leica lenses then the XV has many advantages (particularly is close focussing capabilities) over the T and is a real delight to use. Image quality is virtually identical.

If you look at the rest of Andrew Kim's blog, you'll see that he has an exquisite sense of delicacy in colour. His images uniformly have a clean, spare look that simultaneously shows fine gradations of colour and texture. In an earlier blog post, probably in his review of the Sony RX1, he says that he receives many questions about his postprocessing, and his answer is that it is a style he took a long time to create.

While he says that he barely adjusts the T's jpeg output in Lightroom, I wouldn't be so sure. One man's bare is another man's bush. Wow, that sounded incredibly wrong. But you get the idea. One test would be to get some T jpeg samples and adjust them until you get a 'Minimally Minimal' look, and see how much work it takes.

I can not talk much about jpg but how files look in LR without doing much change.

The X-Vario files seem not much different from T-files.

The blue skys of the X-Vario sometimes Show slightly more Cyan, while the blue skys of the X-Vario sometimes have slightly more red in the blues.

I also find X-Vario files to come out slightly more saturated, contrasty and slightly warmer, while T-files come out a little cooler.

The differences in user Interface are much bigger than the difference in IQ.
