I have red that the Leica T (701) will receive soon an update for its firmware (LUF testers requested from Leica: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-t/345877-beta-testers-wanted-new-leica-t.html).

Can we hope that the XVario will see also soon such an update???

If I was given a £1 every-time this question was asked ...

I share your frustration. I am sure Leica will address the deficiency.

Hello David,

I just wish I shared your enthusiasm for all things Leica but lt us just hope they will indeed provide a much needed update which if it ever happens might hopefully shorten the X-Vario's wake up time and make the Exposure and AF systems more reliable, though personally I rather doubt it will ever happen as I suspect Leica's boffins have moved on to favor other products within Leica's range instead. But who knows? Stranger things have happened and so we can but live on in hope.

I fear you might be right Don, regarding Leica's priorities. If I remain optimistic it is because I am getting such good results from my small bag with X1 and XV cameras. Indoors, the X1 proves better for many shots while the excellent versatile XV lens continues to surprise me with its performance. True some improvements would help, but they are not critical to my fields of application.

I was rather hoping member MJH would have joined the discussions on the subject firmware update debate. He is unusually well-informed. The fact that he hasn't reduces my expectations unfortunately.

The XV has no major bugs or deficiencies ...... so there is no urgency in some firmware tweaks and improvements ........

The T is a flagship product and has a number of minor glitches and some poorly implemented/inconsistent features .... so I think Leica are giving it priority ...... and I wouldn't expect to see the fruit of the beta testing for a couple of months from past experience ......

Having said that ...... Leica were VERY responsive to the last M beta testing findings and quick to provide updates to try again ...... pity they aren't doing it with the XV .....

I read that you must use the flash when you want the automatic picture review switch off to work. Isn't that the case? What would be a major bug for you which can be fixed with a FW update?

Except the auto-iso-implementation of the X-Vario and x2 is not really usefull at all and different from all other digital Leicas.

Depends on what you call major? I regard any camera which takes so long to start up from switching on as my X-Vario does as having not just MAJOR but also inexcusable faults, and that is without my even mentioning the unduly hit or miss AF rate or the oft strange Auto Exposure results, none of which problems should be suffered in this day and age, let alone by such a expensive and otherwise potentially superb little camera. Hi All, well having kicked around for many moons, I had one of the original build it yourself Lotusi, what fun, what adrenaline, b u t -> time @ Lotus or the dealership (Edgware, Mddx, UK) was as regular as the local mailman.. I have come to accept the shortcomings of these hybrid Leica's. Yes, for the $$$'s they cost and the overall investment in the marque, Leica should & must do better. A very stiff email/letter to each of the Leica board will show your discontent & will I'm sure get some ball rolling somewhere. I really do think that Leica are somewhat behind in the digital technology field, yes they tweak the sensors & processors to give the "Look" we want and kudos for that b u t the overall reliability & QC are NOT on a par with the price tag.......

If a camera cannot "Do" what the Menu's show, then remove it from the Menu! get a third party electronics guru the find and sort out the M "Freezing" issue.. My own thoughts, that the power required when everything is On and being used outweighs the battery/power circuits capabilities,. As much as I want the Digital Rangefinder experience, I will not plonk my $'s down until the Mothership acknowledge & can sort out these current issues. The XV has shortcomings, but overall a far better reliability history than the afore mentioned M range. I want my car To GO' my camera To Work' and my bank to be happy to see me!....... :)

Yes thighslapper you are right: no major bugs and deficiencies. BUT, at least what the menu indicates should at least work! What about to not use the LSD for automatic review? What about to have the choice to shot only DNG? What about a real auto-iso process?

My remark (linking to the T system updating) was in relation to the Leica factory history and fame: remember the cameras were said to be repaired for a "life" time, when cameras were mainly constructed with metal pieces. Now that the sofware (firmware) takes a large part of the camera performances, I have the feeling that Leica should put attention of the maintenance-improvment of this part of their products. It is the case for the Ms (M8,M9,M240) and apparently the T range. So I still hope that the XV will be treated as well as a serious product.;)

Thanks WDA to have brough attention on this problem to Mr Admin (Andreas Jürgensen)..

You cannot shoot only DNG as the camera uses the JPG for the display

And the reason is probably also why the camera is slow to power up, slow to update the EVF, slow AF and slow between shots ......

INADEQUATE PROCESSOR POWER....

It afflicts M, T and X.

Firmware revision will make only a slight difference to this.

They need to steal Sonys Bionx or Nikons Exspeed processors ......

If other X Vario owners share the views expressed on lack of firmware update, it might help if you added to my post on this parallel thread which deals with the T. http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-t/345877-beta-testers-wanted-new-leica-t.html

If two new X-series cameras are about to be introduced, presumably they will take the new EVF, and perhaps the X-Vario firmware will be updated at the same time. And maybe the update will make the new EVF usable on the X-Vario as well? This would explain the delay.

Many perhaps and maybe.

Maybe the T EVF fits on the new X's and Fw will neuer come...
