X Vario autofocus setting

Decided to go for a (used) X Vario to complement my M system, if I got the T I would probably use it only with the standard zoom, and then the X Vario is a lot cheaper. And I like the controls, more M-like.

Just tested it last weekend, and had a couple of mis-focused pictures (groups of 2-3 people, camera focused on background/infinity).

I remember some discussion here on autofocus settings, after some experience with use is there a conclusion on what autofocus setting works best?

I think this is a personal choice. Multi-zone focusing often gave me incorrect choice. It tends to latch onto the nearest and often unwanted object. So I generally use single zone or occasionally spot, the latter where extra precision is needed, such as eyes in a portrait. My method is not unique to the X Vario.

Ditto ..... and if you want to be extra sure pick a pick a point with high vertical contrast to lock focus and then recompose if necessary ........ accurate AF use is not completely user independent and a bit of understanding of how it works .... and more importantly why it fails.... is effort well spent.

I get good results with AF one field.

However I also use manual focus a lot, like we used to do long, long time ago, and it always works OK for me. Using the hyperfocal distance with a small aperture you can have from 1.5 meters to infinity sharp.

I can assure you I know about manual focus. But my question was about autofocus - I am trying to set up this camera for the lucky person in my family who is going to Namibia later in the fall...

It has been said by others in various other threads and websites, but the X Vario is a point and think more than a point and shoot. While in theory if you set everything on auto you should get good results, it doesn't quite work like that in practice. Autofocus is a known weakness with the X Vario, for some more than others, especially when compared with a DSLR. I am not sure I would give an X Vario to a "non photographer" who wants good-enough results every time.

I'm getting a bit more advice than I asked for here, guess I should be grateful, but she is not a non-photographer. All I asked for was the best autofocus setting, I think I got it.

I always use single zone and no problems encountered.

Best

I'm new to the X Vario and using firmware 1.0 The problem is that I cannot find how to set it to a single zone focus. I have been through the menus several times and the manual.

If someone could point me in the right direction, I sure would appreciate it. Thanks!

Sure.

Step one: Switch it on.

Step two: Press the button Delete/Focus on the back of the camera and choose between:

1Point

11Point

Spot

Face Detection

If you press it and hold it you can start moving your single point in the frame. Of course you have to choose first 1Point or Spot to do so.

Hi, it's activated using the Delete/Focus Button..

Located under the Play. button.Top Left (facing the back of the camera)

:)

Thanks!! That did the trick and now I have it where I want it. Strange how they did that.
