evf need

Only you can tell whether an EVF suits your shooting style. If it does then I would suggest getting the cheaper but technically equivalent Olympus version.

Good point. I did order the evf by Olympus from Amazon. It has not arrived and it is returnable. I had not really considered the optical view finder. I will have to quickly rethink this. Is there a ovf made by Olympus that would be suitable?

Neither the Leica branded EVF or the Olympus are the best quality in respect to the current technology found on today's EVFs. But they work perfectly fine and the lesser cost of the Olympus EVF makes it a worthwhile consideration.

Remember that the EVF will give you all the info that the LCD has, including focusing confirmation and 100% framing accuracy (and also playback review.) It's very handy (at times even necessary) when the sun is too bright to read off the LCD, etc.. And since the LCD is turned off altogether while using the EVF, it's something that might be important in situations where you don't want the LCD to be on. Personally, I've found that those reasons are enough for having the EVF.

You will hardly regret getting the EVF for your X2. In bright light it is very useful, and it is actually not bad at all - very bright and well working in my opinion. The tilt option is also useful for shooting low angled shots.

I bought my X2 second hand and the Leica EVF was a part of the deal - I must admit that it is on the camera most of the time. Go for the OLY and save some bucks!

Should I get the EVF2 for the X Vario? It seems so outdated. Will Leica come out with an updated design based on the Olympus VF4?

Leica just recently introduced an improved EVF with a similar specification as the VF-4, but it is for the T which has a new, improved, but sadly incompatible interface. Your best bet is the Olympus VF-2. Don’t spend too much on a viewfinder that may not be future-proof.

The Olympus VF-1 is usable on the X2, but is not optically correct. It shows the correct diagonal angle of view, but has a 4:3 aspect ratio and not the 3:2 ratio of the X2.

It's not optically correct but it works fine none the less.
