Dust in the lens (X Vario)?

I wanted to write only good things about the X Vario in this forum, but now I have to depart from this. Recently, I discovered something in my photos (at f16, 70 mm) what I am currently regarding as dust in the lens - and not on the sensor.

Reason: The dust particle changes when I zoom the lens (it gets more blurred when I open aperture, but that is also the case with dust on the sensor).

Here is a sample photo, on which I discovered the dust:

Admittedly, I would rather have expected this issue for the "wobbly" lenses of our Ricoh cameras, but not for the "classic" X Vario lens.

Please look here if you are interested in details (there are also 2 videos in which I vary the focal length): Leica X Vario: Damages to the Camera

In the next days, I will call Leica and arrange for a repair. I will report on this matter here it if there is something to report ...

Best regards, Gerd

It is difficult to assess as shown. But I think it might be sensor debris; air is sucked inside and blown out depending on your environment. The arrow points to something quite big. It is easy to clear that in LightRoom, where it is visible. If you cannot stand that solution over time, Leica should clean it for you. I would doubt you have suddenly got visible dust particles inside your lens.

I found that dust got onto the sensor of every fixed lens digital I've had, and vowed never to buy another for this reason.

It would be quite easy for the manufacturers to seal the lens/sensor assembly to avoid this problem (I bet you'd find if you opened up the camera that dust/hair was getting in through the body).

Me too, but I suddenly realized it. I rarely shoot at f16 and against the sky using the tele end of the lens. The dust may be there for months or even longer.

mine had similar that appeared after a few months one day - one looked like an eyelash or similar and the second some other sort of fibre. They also did appear to vary a bit with aperture/zoom but I think despite this they were probably on the sensor.

sorted by Leica free with a 2 week turnaround......

these are at different focal lengths ..... remember the camera does some in-camera cropping as it corrects the w/a images in particular ....

Yesterday, my Leica X Vario returned home from Leica (after 3 weeks, including Easter holidays...).
Leica cleaned the sensor at no charge - thank you, Leica! - and the dust* has disappeared!
(There was no response to my questions regarding "AF" and "AWB" issues, which I had illustrated with sample photos.)
Best regards, Gerd

*) I was able to track it back for nearly a year (end of March 2014).
