Hi everyone,

after 20 years i'm going to start my old hobby again.

My last camera's: nikon Fm with 50 mm and a nikon F401x(with a couple of lenses).

Normaly i would choose for nikon again(slr),but i was looking on the leica website and saw the X1...

I can get it new for 1250 euro,

buying?

My guess is you'll appreciate the use of a view finder with the X1, so you might wish to factor in the cost of that - you should be able to get an X1 with a viewfinder for around €1400 new or €850-€1100 second hand.

You'll love the quality of the X1 lens. See here for the most comprehensive evaluation I have seen anywhere Leica X1 - camera review - Introduction - Lenstip.com

If I was buying new now, I'd also be curious to compare the Fuji X Pro 1 with 35mm lens (50mm equivalent), that together will cost about the same money, when it launches in 2 months' time.

I would be surprised to see optical quality beaten for the price: so unless you want more flexibility than the X1 offers, such as interchangeable lenses or faster low light focusing, the X1 is still a really solid performer and is capable of exceptionally high image quality.

Enjoy; I have never had more enjoyment with a camera than the X1.

Heku, welcome to the forum! You will find many highly satisfied owners of the X1 on this forum, who have stayed loyal despite late entrant competition. Of course there will always be something better 'round the corner' but, used intelligently and with thought, the X1 is outstanding for fairly compact precision camera.

In this forum you will indeed find many enthusiasic X1 users. You will also find many Leica loyalists that are not terribly critical.

I have been using Leica M cameras for a couple of decades now (and other rangefinder cameras off and on during close to half a century). Frankly, I would never consider using an X1. To quote myself: "A camera without a proper finder is a cell phone you can't make calls from."

Oh Lars, should I be surprised by your confession! Of course the X1 is not perfect; there are clearly well-documented critical reports. I agree with your viewfinder criticism. However, for a small package, there was nothing to touch it for output quality which is one reason Getty quickly accepted it as a suitable camera for its contributors. I use it in a different area for stock photography and it complements my other kit.

While not perfect, I find the excellent external Leica viewfinder for the X1 very effective and reliable, notwithstanding its lack of real-time operating information. But we did not have that with the M3 which served thousands of skilled photographers well for years. Modern electronics spoils the younger generation who expect everything in the tiniest mobile telephone package. I didn't realise you shared their views so steadfastly.

You are correct in observing that there are expressions of blind loyalty to Leica in the forums. Discerning readers should be able to divine the truth if they take the time and look at the evidence objectively.

Now back to a bit more editing!

I am new to the x1 too and i love the look of the camera and the portability, but im getting wayyyy better pics with my d5000. I thought it was suppose to get equally good pics!! i might sell it

If you've only just started using the X1 over the last few days; Persevere! The X1 is so much more than a point-and-shoot camera, notwithstanding the relative simplicity of its functionality compared to many modern cameras. However, once you're familiar with it, it will help you faithfully reproduce the expressions of life you have composed in your mind's eye.

Each to his or her own, but for me the X1 does a much better job of that than my Canon 40D DSLR with handgrip and the following EOS lens: 24mm, 50mm, 60mm macro, 10-22mm & the L version of 100-300mm. Odd really, given the little camera's limited comparative nature, but then photography is rather more than the technical sum of its parts. Since it's as much about the person taking the pictures, I can see how the X1 isn't going to suit everyone.
