Advertisement Posted August 27, 2009 Posted August 27, 2009 Hi Mauribix, Take a look here Vario Elmar-S 30-90. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
stevelap Posted August 27, 2009 Share #2 Posted August 27, 2009 Do you know when this lens should be available (i.e. at the launch of the camera or later) and what should be its price range? Thanks guys It's not going to be one of the first four lenses available at or soon after the launch according to Leica, as reported by the BJP British Journal of Photography - All go on new Leica system and others. I've not seen anything on price concerning this lens yet.
Mauribix Posted August 27, 2009 Author Share #3 Posted August 27, 2009 Thank you Steve, but in the initail set of four lenses I can see just primes... Am I missing something. thank you anyway.
stevelap Posted August 27, 2009 Share #4 Posted August 27, 2009 It does seems as though primes will be it initially, for a few months at least. A shame, as the Vario would interest me along with the 35 and 120.
Mauribix Posted August 27, 2009 Author Share #5 Posted August 27, 2009 Yep, that's the same for me. I could have thought about the S2 more seriously now with the Vario available.
lxlim Posted August 28, 2009 Share #6 Posted August 28, 2009 Yep, that's the same for me. I could have thought about the S2 more seriously now with the Vario available. A few months of quiet meditation on the S2 with the Vario might be a helpful exercise.
c6gowin Posted August 29, 2009 Share #7 Posted August 29, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I too wish the 30 - 90 would be available at the S2 launch. It would make entry into a S2 kit much easier.
sdai Posted August 29, 2009 Share #8 Posted August 29, 2009 BJP says on this Wednesday that only the 70 and 180 CS lenses will accompany the S2 launch, we shall see the 120 macro and 35 before year end but that's all, they don't seem to know about the schedule of the other 4 lenses at all. lxlim Posted August 29, 2009 Share #9 Posted August 29, 2009 we might be in a hurry but Leica should not be in a hurry. The Vario is likely the only lens I will get if I buy an S2. Fortunately in my case, I'm fine with waiting or rather my accountant says I'm fine with waiting.
c6gowin Posted August 30, 2009 Share #10 Posted August 30, 2009 I have been wanting the S2 since it was introduced and now that pricing has been announced it will be a stretch for me to afford a S2 with just one lens. That is why I wished the 30 - 90 were available at launch. I doubt I could get by with one prime (e.g., 70 mm) for the S2. I don't fit the target market Leica has aimed for the S2. However, if the 30 - 90 were available they would likely make an unexpected sale.
ptomsu Posted August 30, 2009 Share #11 Posted August 30, 2009 If I would get an S2, the 30-90 would be a fix starter, together with some primes. I wish that Leica proves they can hold what they promised with the S System, IQ wise, support wise, availability and future development. Have to agree Mark it is a shame this is not out on release , I think a lot of folks would opt for this as their first lens to have. For the hobbyist that may not need the speed of the primes it's a great choice.

For the hobbyist that may not need the speed of the primes it's a great choice. Yep, count me in too. Maybe the intended target, as discussed before, was meant to be somekind of Fashion photography, but I could have thought about the S2 as a "reportage" camera too, and the 30-90 could have been the best solution IMO to do the trick. I'll wait the launch of that lens (and hopefully of the M9) to see what path to walk on...
dritz Posted April 19, 2013 Share #14 Posted April 19, 2013 30 months have passed, and the 30-90 is finally available. The only pictures I've seen are pictures of the lens itself... nothing particularly of review value. Anyone aware of reviews of the lens? Or, what would constitute a useful contribution of its performance? Thanks. Dean
peterv Posted April 20, 2013 Share #15 Posted April 20, 2013 Dean, indeed there is not much info about this lens to be found on the net. Perhaps these threads are of interest. http://www.reddotforum.com/showthread.php/918-Leica-Vario-Elmar-S-30-90-mm http://www.reddotforum.com/showthread.php/957-30-90-mm-zoom http://www.reddotforum.com/showthread.php/732-Leica-30-90mm-Specs
spoons Posted April 21, 2013 Share #16 Posted April 21, 2013 I have mine and it's wonderful, worth the wait.
GMB Posted April 22, 2013 Share #17 Posted April 22, 2013 (edited) This lens rocks! The only issues are price (you forget about it) and weight (you get used to it). I will post some shots shortly on another forum and let you know (it makes no sense to post them here, because of the size limitations). The shot of the snowy street in Brussels in one of the Reddot threads linked above was from me. During a recent trip to Florida, I made 90% of the shots with this lens. vintola Posted November 8, 2013 Share #18 Posted November 8, 2013 How long have You been waiting Vario-Elmar? I ordered mine in June and it hasn't come yet. The vendor has no information, when it will come. - vintola -
albertknappmd Posted November 9, 2013 Share #19 Posted November 9, 2013 I waited patiently for over six months, received it in August and have since been enthralled by this superb piece of glass! Albert :)
stephan_w Posted March 10, 2014 Share #20 Posted March 10, 2014 would anyone be so nice to show some photos that make it possible to evaluate the bokeh of this lens? Is it possible to make nice portraits with it?
