Leica S or S-E (006) high ISO performance

I rarely shoot my S2 above 640, preferring to push it in post-processing. Is the S-E any better at high ISO such as having a genuinely usable 1200?... I shouldn't complain after years of ISO400 limits... but it would be nice to have some room to work with.

Thank you.

Dean,

The S 006 and S-E have a different ISO scale (100,200,400,800,1600), so there is no direct ISO 1250 comparison to be made. I'd say that ISO 800 on the S 006 is as good or a little better than ISO 640 on the S2. You also get the added advantage of a real ISO 100, rather than a Pull 80.

The real high ISO change will come with the S 007, as Leica has made mention of good performance up to ISO 6400.

I am looking forward to the (typ 007) becoming available too. I may need to sell a kidney though. Notwithstanding that, the current sensor (I have the S2) can make good images at its ISO limit. I think that the key when needing to shoot to that limit. is careful noise reduction techniques when developing from the raw files.

These are pretty much all with the 70 wide open and down to slow shutter speed as well.

Maybe the thing to do is to try and shoot at -2EV like the DMR. I could get pretty good results at ISO800 with the DMR at gigs. I have used the S(006) at gigs. Here's Jesus and the Mary Chain in their Psychocandy revival tour taken at ISO800.

(PS - If you see a projection pattern in the image, it's the background projection)

For some more insight into high ISO performance on the Leica S/S2, check out this article from a while back:

Maximizing High ISO Performance on the Leica S2

Keep in mind, the images in that article were processing in LR 3.4. The noise reduction and sharpening algorithms now are a fair amount better than they were in LR 3.x.

Is this due for a much needed update, David ? It would be greeted by an appreciative audience. :)
