Hallo all,

is it possible that copying slides with R9/DMR and Novoflex bellows with dia copy insert is limited due to crop factor? Neither with Macro Elmar4/100 or Summicron 50/2 1 can reach 1.1. Copy is always slightly larger. Other lens suggested?

Now that's one thing I haven't done with my DMR, as I use a slide scanner instead.

The crop factor of the DMR seems to be 1.37; this means that the diagonal of the sensor is 1.37 times smaller than the diagonal of the slides. Hence, in order to copy the entire 35mm slide, you have to aim for a reproduction scale of 1:1.37, not 1:1.

I take several magnified shots (usually 4) with overlap of each transparency (on a Canon) then merge them in Photoshop. This way I can actually image the grain although the file ends up being rather large. Shooting RAW, and adjusting all files identically, has yielded some very effective results - I used to have a Nikon 8000 scanner and am sure that copying carefully in RAW (I use an old lightbox as the illuminant) works equally as well, if not better. I see no reason that you should not do the same on the DMR but would say that you might find it easier to use a bellows and lens rather than any specific slide duplicator set-up.

I have a scanner Konica Minolta dimage II for 35mm slides and Negatives 5400dpi plus a Canon flatbedscanner 9950 for medium format negatives or slides.

 

However, I have a few thousand of slides and I was looking for a faster way of copying.

Here is my solution see picture:

I have a Kaiser 6x6 enlarger. I was fixing a plate to hold the camera (R8DMR).

on the bottom, there is the Color head for Illumination (color can be corrected).

On top there is a water gauge for fixing the camera parallel to the slide

Taking some copies in Raw, allows me to find out the best color correction, then I use Jpg for fast copying.

The result is not as good as per my scanner but is much faster and good enough for prints to A4 or presenting on Television.

I really like your examples. They have a "Film" look to them.

 

After all these years of continued development in digital photography the DMR just continues to amaze.

It (the DMR) really doesn't have a right to be this good.

 

What does that tell you about marketing practices and actually getting what you paid for?

 

Bravo Leica. Now all they have to do is give us a proper R solution. :D:D

in the 90th I purchased the first NIKON scanner, LS1000, and made a lot of scans during the first 5 years. But every slide/negative needs so much time until the picture is finished. So I gave up scanning after more than 2000 scans. Than purchased a DMR and started copying my slides and negatives with DMR/R8, Apo-Macro 2,8/100 and 1:1 ELPRO together with an old BESELER copy stand (http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/technik-industrie/132599-bahnbetriebswerk-ottbergen-1976-a.html #16). Since that time I produced more than 6000 digital copies from my own slides and from very old slides and negatives from my father and my grandfather as well. If the copy stand is completely arranged it needs only 25 minutes to bring a whole film onto the SD card and another 30 minutes to finish them with lightroom.

 

Of course clean working is essential, because there is no scratch and dust removing technology, but if one works accurately the results are at any time good enough for prints in 20cm x 30cm size or bigger. For me this is the best method to get digital data from classical silver slides and negatives in a good ratio to the exspended time.

When I use the novoflex bellows, with Macro Elmar 4/100 and the slide holder for the bellows, I am stuck with a too high magnification already in Minimum bellows extension. When I use a normal 50 mm still the magnification is too high. Any idea which lens might be better?

With any Leica R and Film and Novoflex Automatic Bellow and Makro 60 lens you could copy 1:1,

but with DMR you have a crop of 1:1.37 that means you cannot copy the full slide.

The only 1:1 solution is with M(240) and R to M adapter plus above bellows and Makro 60 lens.

Or with a Sony A7 with R to Sony adapter and same Bellow setup.

What is the minimum extension possible with your bellows?

See my post above. Simply take two overlapping shots and merge them in software - if you have suitable software, open both RAW files together and synchronise settings before opening and merging; this will give you are bigger file too - it works surprisingly well but is slower than shooting a single image which is its only drawback.

I either go for the free hanging construction from Peter using DMR/Macro and the color head of an older lab-magnifier or I will try the M9/visoflex/bellows version as shown in another forum stream if I find some time to reproduce the wooden baseplate for the novoflex slide holder.

 

I will not try try the M240/R adapter/bellows version, although this might be the most versatile idea.

I am still hesitant to buy a M240 since I love my M9 and I wouldn't carry 2 rangefinders at once around with 2 chargers and different batteries etc. I am just not ready to give up the M9 and as 2nd camera option I really like my R9/DMR with 100/4.5 Macro.

This the one you are looking for. However it would take time to put every single slide in the slide holder.

I still prefer the solution with the color head as shown above.

You just prepair a frame in which the slide fits in, than you can copy 36 slides in may be 10 minutes.

It is important to do some tests finding out the best color temperature and than keep it for the same slide type.
