Advice needed –*Motor Drive R doesn't work

Hey y'all (says the newbie),

I'm not a Leica owner (yet) but a befrieded photographer borrowed me his old and trustworthy R5 with two very nice lenses (21 mm Super Angulon and Kinoptik 75/f2,5 Macro) and a Motor Drive R with grip.

This old buddy sat in a box for ages (literally) as he is a professional photographer and started shooting digital over 15 years ago. The body itself works (after I replaced the small batteries), however the Motor Drive R doesn't. I have put freshly loaded batteries in it (eneloops), made sure the contacts are free of corrosion and the batteries in the correct order and polarity.

After touching the shutter on the grip the red numbers in the viewfinder lit up for a brief second and then - nothing happens. No shutter release, no measurements taken etc.

With my limited knowledge of electronics I speculate if a capacitor inside the Motor Drive R may have died over time – but maybe you guys have some other ideas or even you had the same problem and can tell me a solution.

As it is not my camera, taking it to a Leica shop or opening it are not really options, however if this is your advice I would speak with the owner of the beauty first ...

Many thanks.

Hi there!

Nice combo, you got! :-)

Well, drive and winder are normally hardly giving any problems. Maybe it´s a contact issue. Try to clean all electronic contacts on winder and camera. And, it might be a good idea, to measure the voltage on the batterie box. Sometimes the contact springs are not giving perfect contact and then you won´t get full voltage.

Is the shutter releasing, when you use the camera release button?

Don´t think,by the way, that there is a condenser issue.

Good luck,

Torsten

Hey there Dikker!

Since you state using Eneloop batteries I would think that if you mean the ones I have they are the rechargeable batteries right?

If yes, then maybe it does not work because the batteries give 1.2v instead of the normal 1.5 volt for NON rechargeable batteries. Maybe you want to try use normal AA batteries.

Just my quick thought... this is sometimes the case especially with older equipment that existed before the 1.2v aa batteries existed at all!!

Hope this might help,

P.S.

Nice camera, and I love the 21mm lens, I was looking for one a while ago to use on my R8 and M240 but forgot I was!!!
