R solution that's better than the DMR

I have tried Canon 1D mark 4 as my R solution particularly for sports. However, when I don't have to have a fast frame/sec, I find myself reaching for the DMR because I prefer the image quality ie for macros, portraits etc.

 

I am trying to find a backup body for my R lenses. Does anyone have an R solution, that matches the DMR's image quality? I don't have a M yet but is the M240 images comparable or is there something comparable to the images we are getting with the older classic DMR?

It's an impossible question to answer. What is on your wish list of properties? Do you need ack-ack repetition rates? Do you need full frame? Do you want also to continue to use your R glass on Leica R film cameras, and therefore avoid replacing the mounts? Do you do a lot of tripod work?

 

(a) I work a lot with a tripod

(B) I need full frame with all my lenses

© I don't want to change my lens mounts

 

My "best" solution is therefore an M240 +M-R adapter + EVF2.

 

This may be hopeless for other people's needs.

That is a hard one to answer. The DMR files are marvellous and the colour is beautiful, but the M files are technically better, far less high ISO noise and better resolution. I think that for general use with good light the DMR is still first choice.

For me, I need a proper VF that works well in low light with no delay. The M240 and EVF just wouldn’t work in the press pit at concerts. Perfomers and singers don’t stand still. If they do the gig standing still, then you ain’t going to get any stellar pics.

 

So for my use, the DMR still rules. In good light, the colour from the DMR is better than my M9 IMHO. Don;t know about the M240, as I don’t have one.

On getdpi.com I asked Sony A7/A7r users who had previously used the DMR how the Sonys' color quality compares with the DMR. The response was "closest I've seen so far". Add to this the ability to use R lenses without changing mounts (vs. many other R solutions) and the A7 and A7r merit serious consideration. I recently had the opportunity to try the Sony cameras for a few minutes with an R lens (100 APO) and the viewfinder, while not as pleasurable as a good optical viewfinder, was easy to focus with the R lens.

I have no experience with a DMR.

I use my R lenses 28-90/2.8-4.5, 80-200/4, 105-280/4.2, 180/3.4, 280/4 on Sony NEX-7 and A7R.

The NEX-7 has a smaller pixel pitch and captures more detail but less field of view.

Colors of both cameras seem fine to me.

On tripod magnification seems to work better for me than focus peaking.

To better focus handheld something equivalent of the Olympus 5-axis IBIS would be very desirable.

Oh, and a shutter with less shake than the one in the A7R especially for tele lenses is needed.

There's nothing wrong with you Canon 1D mark 4 solution.

I'm using a Canon 1Ds mark 2 and love how the handling and weight of that camera is very similar to my R8-DMR.

 

Lots of comments about the Sigma "Foveon" sensor and how "great" it is on various sites... It all sounds so familiar. :rolleyes:

I really miss the film days sometimes.

My problem with Canons is that I can't use all my R lenses on the full frame Canons, because of mirror clearance issues, and the non full frame ones are, well, non full frame. So there is something wrong for me with all the Canons.

Then there is something wrong with the DMR as well, as it is not full frame either...

This can be fixed with a Metabones SpeedBooster for a full frame equivalent FOV and a very welcome extra stop. E.g. 180/3.4 becomes a 180/2.4.

Loss of quality is minimal, but it is important to note that not all R lenses are compatible.

Agreed; which is why I waited for the M240; but if a DMR is acceptable for the OP to back up his Canon 1D/4, then, of course, the available options are wider (if not wider).

I understand the "no" in your reply is just subjective evaluation of corner performance.

Too bad it does not work with my Summicron-R 35 (last version).
