chrisho Posted November 7, 2013 Share #1 Posted November 7, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello all, Brand new to the forum & have a few questions if someone can help me out. Recently, I was handed down a; Leitz/Leica Super-Angulon -R 24MM f/4 However, I am not a Leica collector or shooter (I own Nikon dSLR) and have no use for it and would like to sell it. The overall lens looks to be in good condition, but if I gently shake it, there seems to be an intermittent rattle in there, maybe a set screw loose? Attached are a few photos. Any advice on selling it online (eBay) or taking it to my local camera shop to sell? I am just not sure on what the 'rattle' inside may be. Or is it common with the age/lens? Also, I am looking at a ball-park range of what the lens is worth. I know there is a cosmetic issue. But the glass & aperture blades seem to be in great condition! chrisho Posted November 7, 2013 Author Share #3 Posted November 7, 2013 That stain look nasty in the last photo. Water damage? Oh no, I forgot to mention. It was an old price tag that had been left on there for years.
algrove Posted November 7, 2013 Share #4 Posted November 7, 2013 Oh no, I forgot to mention. It was an old price tag that had been left on there for years. Did you check eBay under advance search and then completed listings?
chrisho Posted November 8, 2013 Author Share #5 Posted November 8, 2013 Did you check eBay under advance search and then completed listings? Just checked eBay, thanks for the tip. This lens ranges from $500 & up depending on condition. I understand it has a cosmetic issue with the old price tag, but still not certain on what the sound I can hear inside. Do you know if that is common for this lens? Or should I have a repair person look at this before I post on eBay? Thanks!
sc_rufctr Posted November 8, 2013 Share #6 Posted November 8, 2013 You should be able to get the old price tag off with some alcohol or a mild solvent like nail polish remover but don't get any on the glass elements. And it's worth getting it checked out by a tech before selling it.
farnz Posted November 10, 2013 Share #7 Posted November 10, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) ... but if I gently shake it, there seems to be an intermittent rattle in there, maybe a set screw loose? ... Hi, Chris, welcome to the forum! The rattle is more likely to be the aperture blades. They are looser on some Leica lenses and shaking the lens can make them happy and they will 'sing' as they brush together. Pete.

So as it sounds, it's common for the rattle to happen. I don't know much about the lens, nor, do I know anyone locally to seek advice. I contacted K.E.H. and they quoted me a maximum of $350 dollars USD, but I think that's a bit low. I think I am going to go ahead and sell this on eBay from what I've seen sold recently. Based on the photos/description of this thread, what would you rate the condition of this lens? Good/Excellent/Mint? Maybe $500 & up? Thanks all! -Chris
farnz Posted November 11, 2013 Share #9 Posted November 11, 2013 Sorry, Chris, providing valuation information isn't allowed on this site. I think it has to do with legal matters. Pete.
dkCambridgeshire Posted November 11, 2013 Share #10 Posted November 11, 2013 The stain should dissolve if you dab/rub it carefully using a Q Tip (cotton wool stick) soaked, (but not dripping wet soaked) in lighter fluid (petrol). You could list the lens in the forum's 'Buy and Sell' section and save paying Ebay fees. If not sure of what price to list it at, think of a higher price than those seen on Ebay and list it as an 'o.n.o.' .. and see what offers are made. http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/market/categories/leica-r-lenses-objektive.html Dealers' 'used' lists should give you a guide price. The small fee incurred for listing the lens in 'Buy and Sell' is a very cost effective means of finding a buyer. dunk

Thanks for the Q-tip method, I will absolutely try that in the next few days. I will lightly dab and pick off the old tag. Also, I will seriously look into this sites own 'Buy & sell' part. I am just concerned of International sales/shipping costs. I would probably only sell to U.S. buyers, due to past personal history of mine selling items overseas. Thanks to Pete as well for assuring me of the 'rattle' inside the lens. -Chris
Torquinian Posted February 9, 2014 Share #13 Posted February 9, 2014 Sorry, Chris, providing valuation information isn't allowed on this site. I think it has to do with legal matters. There are a number of dealers who will sell it for you on commission & advise on the rattle. They usually charge 15% or so commission. I have always found this the best way to proceed if you don't know the value.

It's to dissuade time-wasting chancers who think that anything Leica, or purporting to be Leica, is worth a small fortune and thus might result in an offer - without said chancer participating as a regular forum member and without paying dues/fees on the 'Buy & Sell' section. They post a few times and then are never heard from again. dunk
