Back in Leica got me a 1970 - 400mm f6.8 but still a bit of a heathen because I will be using it on a OM-D for birding. Before I get bashed it's what I can afford at the moment.

Here is my question what 1.4x fits this lens, I forgot don't want to but something and have to sell it because it won't fit. I had my head up my rectum a few time because I did and did not ask questions.

I have done a few searches but not much coming up.

Any help would be welcome, Jan

Years ago I used the Leica 1.4 APO extender with the lens. The results were fine but not stellar. I usually opted for the 560 when a longer reach was needed.

One tip if I may. Rather than use a cable release with a long lens, take up any slack by pressing down on the body and then click. You will need to anticipate the small adjustment when framing. This method is steadier than a cable release.

Have you tried using a finger to push the aperture lever on the extender to the other end of its travel before putting it on the lens? What version of the lens is this, visoflex or R? I did not have any problem putting a 1.4x APO extender on my f/6.8 Telyt.

It is the R version, I use to own the APO 1.4x and one of the older 2 or 3 cams, and one of them did not fit the R tube on the 400, 560 lenses.

Thanks Doug I will look for the APO 1.4x, now I wish I did not sell my 280mm rom with the 1.4 and 2x TC's

There was one heck of a good lens.

I found a marsh ( wetlands ) only 35 min from my house and theres a eagle nesting. They blocked off a area so the eagles have some piece from us camera crazy and scope crazy birders. That means my panny 100-300mm = 200-600mm on the M4/3 is not long enough. Thats why I bought the 400mm it = 800mm on the OM-D.

I did get pics of the eagles with the 100-300 had to crop the pics and still not close enough.

Thanks Again Doug

Got a second question, on the leica 400mm 6.8 if I remember right some had the pull back filter slot and some did not. Can anyone tell me when they started to add the filter slot to the 400mm 6.8?? Year or serial number?

I don't recall seeing any without the filter slot. I bought mine in 1979 FWIW.

Since the lens head with the s/n can be interchanged with any camera mount tube (where the filter slot would be), s/n or age of the lens head should not be used to determine if the lens has a filter slot or cams.

Does the m tube have the slot?

Well my lens came today, sorta he forgot to put the lens head in the box, funny, well he shipped it this morning. My r- m4/3 adapter is on the way.

And You are right my r tube has the filter slot so my guess is the m tube does not have it. I remember having one of them that did not have a filter slot. This is my 3rd 400 over the last 20 years. had both m and r mounts.

The M tube I used to have had the slot.

To add a UV filter to the front you have to get a adapter ring whats the number of the ring? ( my lens head has not arrived yet. )

Really appreciate the help. Jan

Lens head came today and the glass is in very good condition as is the slide, it is holding. There is a minor scuff but my aluminum gun blue should remove it, it's only the anodizing that started to rub off most likely from being in a case or bag. That brings me to my last question I don't want to buy a large pelican case for the lens so what are you using to transport and store the lens without breaking it down?

Any one know what leica filter ring on the front V11 or V111?

Thanks again.

I don't recall the Series VIII ring catalog number, sorry. I made a padded canvas bag for mine.

So it is the series V111 filter ring... there are a few on ebay right now.

I did a search and found a padded tripod case that will work really nice.

Thanks Guys for the help..

I have heard but not verified that if the front rim on the optical cell is ground down flush with the name ring a standard 72mm filter may be used. I'd check this with DAG.

Thank You Doug,

I have read that on line also but seems like a lot of trouble just to add a filter. Would hate to do it with a file.

If I remember don't they give you the ring number on the paper work that came with the lens? I only have the assembly for the shoulder stock paper work.

You don't need to grind anything on the lens. Get a 72-67 step-down adapter ring, which will engage the threads for the front element retaining ring, and then use a 67mm UV. That's how I have used mine for years. It does not vignette.

Will the hood still work the step down ring?
