APO-Extender-R 1.4x, 2x fit on which lens?

I have seen this listed before but can't find the information.

The APO-Extender-R 2x - no ROM - I can successfully attach to the APO-R 180/3.4 and 280/4 - no ROMs either.

However I cannot attach it to the 28-90, 80-200, or 105-280 lenses that have ROMs.

The same for the APO-Extender-R 1.4x.

Of course, it shouldn't be used with the APO-R 180/3.4 as it interferes with the optics of the lens.

Similarly the Leitz 22228/500934 Adapter can only be attached to the APO-R 180/3.4.

http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m9-forum/261611-part-number-22228-500934-problem-r.html#post2231384

Here are my questions:

Which lenses can be used with which APO-Extender-R 1.4x or 2x?

Also, can one make modifications to the 80-200, 105-280 lenses or the extenders so that they work with each other?

Thanks.

I have tended to rely on the Wiki site here where under each lens often mention is made as to which extender will work. Under the extenders on the same site I thought I saw mention as to which lenses they will work with.

The extender manuals are often the best place to look.

Also some extender say which lens(es) they are made for.

Example one of my 1.4x says "FOR 2.8/280 R 2.8/400". It is #3583xxx. Part number 11249. The manual for this extender says it is for use ONLY on the APO-Telyt-R 280/2.8 lens. Then it continues much later about using it without restrictions and with good results on the following additional Leica R lenses such as:

MACRO-ELMAR-R 4/100

ELMARIT-R 2.8/180

TELYT-R 6.8/400

TELTY-R 6.8/560

TELYT-R 6.3/800

Another 1.4x I have says "FOR R 2.8/280". It is #3428xxx and obviously an older model.

Trust this helps a little.

Revised-Now after looking at Wiki here I see they list 10 lenses the 1.4x can used on including but not limited to the 28-90 and the 105-280. Some of the lenses my manual lists are not on the Wiki list. It adds the 180/2.8 but if I recall it is only for the second edition of that model.

Now for the 2x extender R- My notes might be incorrect, but they state the following:

good with the--

60/2.8

80/1.4

100/2.8

180/2 APO

280/4

28-90/2.8-4.5

105-280/4.2

It just could be at the time I wrote this those were the lenses I was going to be using or owned so do not consider it complete by any means. My list stabds corrected as I see on Wiki here that the list is just about any normal to tele R lens.

K-H -

I've been using the 2X APO with the 80-200 ROM since first bying them in late December 1999, and they work remarkably well tiogether with my R8, with or without the DMR. If I recall, the Leica literatures says the 2X APO will work with anything longer than a 50MM. I can't check that since my reference materials are in storage - We're in the midst of an office-wide refurbishment.

Algrove, Stuart,

Many thanks for the information.

Except for the APO-Extender-R 1.4x that protrudes quite a bit forward and therefore cannot be used on lenses where that interferes, I would think the APO-Extender-R 2x should fit on all my R lenses.

My suspicion is that the problem has to do with Cam1, 2, 3, R only kind of incompatibility between lens and adapter. I can stack the adapters, they just don't fit on every lens. There seems to be some sort of protruding pin in the 2x adapter that prohibits attaching the adapter to some lenses.

I wonder how best to deal with this?

Thanks again.

Hi Shed a little light on the subject, I hope its clear enough.

The page is from my 2000 handbook in German , so a little translation is in order.

The Apo Extender R 1.4X is designed for lightvalue f2.8 lenses.

Therefore the Summicron -R f2 180mm should be closed by one to two stops.

According to my instruction booklet for the 28-90 zoom, the 2X Apo Extender can be used. I've just tried mounting the 28-90 ROM lens on the the R9 with the 2X Apo Extender ROM, and everything works just fine. Whether the non ROM version of the 2X Apo Extender is different I don't know. I'm a bit surprised though, in that once the non-ROM extender is mounted on the camera body, I would have thought that the lens should be "seeing" the equivalent of an R3-R7 camera.

[As an aside, some strange things do seem to happen the other way round though. For example, when a non-ROM lens is mounted on a 2X ROM Extender on an R9, no aperture information is sent to the camera. (It's as if once the camera has sensed the presence of the ROM chip on the Extender, it only looks for aperture information from the chip ignoring the R-cam, which of course won't be there with a non-ROM lens.) But that's not your problem!]

I can confirm what John has said: the 28-90 Vario-Elmarit-R asph works with the APO 2x extender. I've used the combination from time to time and it performs well but the 28-90 is one that I normally hand-hold and camera shake with the extender becomes a limiting factor for me. With a tripod of course that problem disappears.

Pete,

Many thanks.

Does that APO 2x extender have a ROM?

Yes, both extender and lens are ROM versions but I use them on a Canon 5D MkII so the ROM is superfluous for me, K-H.

Pete.

Pete,

Thanks. Understood. That wasn't my point.

It appears that my pre-ROM APO-R extenders have a problem with ROM R lenses.

K-H

I have a non-ROM 2x and also a non-ROM 100/2.8 and also a ROM 100/2.8. I also have a ROM and non-ROM 80/1.4. Shall I try something for you. Let me know. Sadly I do not have a ROM extender that I can find in my Pelican cases so far.

Hi Lou,

Many thanks.

I really would appreciate if you tried the various combinations.

Of course, of most interest right now to me is the case non-ROM adapter on R-only lens.

Has any of the items you listed been modified?

Also, are ROM lenses and R-only lenses the same thing?

Thanks again.

There seems to be some sort of protruding pin in the 2x adapter that prohibits attaching the adapter to some lenses.

I wonder how best to deal with this?

When using the lenses on R bodies the advice is to put the extender on the camera first, then put the lens on the extender. This moves the aperture control lever (nearest the red dot) out of the way so the lens will fit properly.

If you're not using the extender on an R body the lever won't be moved out of the way unless you move it with your finger.

Also, are ROM lenses and R-only lenses the same thing?

No. ROM lenses are R-only (except for my custom-modified 180 APO) but there are also R-only lenses without ROM.

Doug,

I had a closer look at the Vario-Elmar-R 80-200/4 and an APO-Extender-R 2x.

In the 2x adapter there are two moving pins, but only one interferes.

Here is what works for me.

• put lens vertically.

• set adapter on top of lens and line up the red dots.

• remove cap from back of adapter.

• with a small screwdriver move pin, from the left of the lined up red dots to the right.

• when that pin is out of the way, adapter sits flush on top of lens.'

• turn adapter to the right until it locks.

• done.

I wonder whether one couldn't modify a lens cap, so that when it is attached, the pin is out of the way?

That would make it much easier yo attach the adapter to the lens.

Many thanks indeed!

K-H, do you still have to go through this procedure even if you mount the adapter on the camera first?

Hi John,

Thanks for the great question.

The problem seems to be with the design of the Leica R to Sony E adapter for example.

That adapter doesn't seem to push the pin in the APO-Extender-R 2x out of the way so that an R only lens (I tried it on my 80-200/4) can be attached.

If you attach adapter and extender first to the camera there is no way I find to push the pin in the extender out of the way.

The answer to your question is: You would have to, but you can't.
