Is the LEICA M with R adapter and EVF the "adequate R solution"?

Voted great solution but inclined to wait...for Leica to address EVF refresh rate concerns.

The way I see it it is fair to assume that Leica will stick to M form for 24x36mm sensor cameras, in that respect it is logical that R solution is embedded into M camera. Optical VF for 28mm-90mm lenses and liveview over LCD plus optional EVF for wider than 28mm and teles (i know of 135mm framelines in OVF) is pretty good combination of best of both worlds.

M(240) contains convergence of digital technologies available today, lets assume that new sensor will be exceptional specially with non dedicated wide lenses and high ISO however based on currently available information there is some concern about low refresh rate on EVF. By the time camera hits shops sometime in 2013 I will have money ready but lets hope that EVF concern is put to rest otherwise I will be inclined to wait for next model. And I would also prefer cosmetic M9P equivalent as I hate the idea of applying insulating tape to the camera.

How will you use the optical finder with R lenses?

Apart from having to hold the frame selector in place to show the correct frame (I wonder which frames are shown when the adaptor is mounted?), there's the matter of focussing.

As I see it R lenses need to be used with the EVF.

or the LCD on the back.

James,

Who said anything about using R lenses with optical VF, 28-90mm range of course refers to M lenses as these are RF coupled.

Actually new M is probably most universal 24x36mm system camera up to date.

I read your previous post as you would use the optical finder for Any lenses 28-90mm.

Of course one could do that with an R lens, but it's not very practical!

This is no R solution as far as I am concerned. If I wanted an M camera I would have gotten that in the first place. However, I never really expected a real R solution from Leica since the demise of the R system. I still have my R8s + DMR and R lenses, they're not going anywhere. However, I'm also quite happy with my D800, D700 + Nikkor lenses. Needless to say that it's highly unlikely that I would get the new M... The "real" R solution is in fact the S, it's full of R DNA from top to bottom, it's an R on steroids, but it is positioned and priced as a medium format system.

To be honest, I voted "not a good solution" ... but I'm gonna buy it anyways. :)

As Yau-sun pointed out above, a proper "R solution" would be a downsized S ... or just make an EVIL model sans the rangefinder utilizing a modified/enhanced M mount as we've discussed in another thread.

I don't think so. If you have to use stop down metering why not go with a bayonet change and a Nikon D800E? That gives you focus confirmation and 36mp.

The EVF with focus peaking is focus confirmation anywhere in the picture area and avoids the inaccuracies and calibration issues much too common with phase-detect DSLR focus confirmation. And focus peaking works with any lens at any aperture.

I have been shooting Leica-R lenses on Canon DSLR cameras for the last 10 years and I'm very pleased with the results of the images made by this combination.

I believe the new Leica-M and Leica-R lenses will work the same way.

The exposure can be set Manually or A-auto. Focussing by full open aperture - live view and then stepping down to the required working aperture. It works okay, but is a slow way to photograph. Luckily all Leica lenses can be used wide open and that can speed up the work process.

I believe LEICA-M + R-Adapter is an adequate solution.

Hopefully Leica in the future will produce some of the finest Leica-R lenses with direct mounting to the Leica-M camera and thereby avoiding the R-adapter?

That could be some of the zoom lenses and the long tele lenses?

Does the Forum members have any suggestions for which Leica-R lenses could be interesting for convertion into Leica-M mount?
