Daumen runter Samsung "Tough" SDHC cards - non compliant

Ad
Just a quickie to let everyone know that these cards DO NOT work in the M9.
The picture will be written to the card but the camera will not replay it - most of the time anyway. When opened on a computer all is ok and the data is intact but the M9 just shows the picture number and doesnt open the file!!!!!
Cards i tried were the silver waterproof/shockproof etc etc 8Gb.

Did you try to format the card in the camera ? Over write ?

I had a slightly different result with the 16GB Samsung--after turning on the camera, the first shot never plays back, only returns file number. Second shot, whether in series or just a little later, plays back normally. On the computer, the first shot is there and OK. I completely re-formated, more than once, including the tedious "overwrite," and still get the same results. I cannot explain this behavior but I would second the OPs opinion. By the way, my card was a gift directly from Samsung after touring their plant in Korea!!

What is the situation now, almost a year and a half since the original post? Is anyone successfully using these cards in an M8 or M9? Adverts for them have appeared in LFI.

Best regards,

Doug

I've just shot 200+ images on a 16GB Samsung card and it has worked just fine.
(M9)

Just to bring this saga up to date – I bought a batch of 4Gb Samsung cards last October just after getting my M9-P and have had virtually no problems with them. I have had only a single instance where a one DNG file was declared unreadable, but the JPEG version of the pic was OK.

I never had any significant problems with Sandisk 2Gb cards in my M8.2, but I have always regarded it as sensible to wait the buffer has emptied before trying to review a photo.

Best regards,

Doug

A further 16 months have gone by, and my Samsung 4Gb cards are still working fine in my M9, with no further image losses.

Many of the postings on this forum reporting SD card problems involve large-capacity cards. I seem to recall reading that cards of 8 Gb and larger use a different electronic configuration, so wonder of this is a factor in some of the problems being reported.

It may be that card sizes have just moved on with passing time, and such sizes are now normal. However, my experience to date has been that a fully-charged battery and an empty 4 Gb card are enough for a day’s shooting with the M9 set to JPEG + DNG.. The only time that I’ve had to change either a battery or a card came when I spent a day in the Forum in Rome.

I’m not a ‘chimper’, so only review a pic if the exposure, framing, or focussing was critical. This keeps life simple, and maximises battery life, but at the cost of losing the occasional image. The worst instance was losing a sequence shot against the light with my Tri-Elmar set to 50 mm. Every image showed massive levels of flare. So that is another instance where I now opt to check the newly-taken image.

Best regards,

Doug

I did some SD card research, based on peoples M9 experiences, before I got my M-E last march.
I use the Samsung 8GB Class10 SDHC card with black metal cover, model MB-SP8GA. I alternate between two cards, never delete pics from card and always format in camera.
I have never had any problems at all. In fact I have bought a small supply of these cards, they are so reliable.
