I'm a newbee in the Leica world, but have a question...

I inted to buy a second hand M9 (10000 clicks). the owner tells me there is no sensor problems.

What if I buy and send it to he headquarters to have an upgrade to M9P?

Can I ask to have to top plate without M-mark? What else is possible?

thanks,

Filip

I had mine done a few months ago. It was an all black M9 and I had it converted to a chrome M9P. It is gorgeous. There is nothing on the front of the top plate and the top of the top plate has a simple script Leica. Don't worry about the sensor. Simply ask them to check it. They will anyway. They did mine and replaced the sensor for no extra change. The upgrade includes a complete CLA. I went for the full 9 yards and had the LCD replaced with the sapphire one. It did that on my M8 and it never showed any scratch marks. It's very durable.

A second hand M9-P doesn't command a $1995 (plus tax) premium over a regular M9, so it would be far cheaper for the OP to wait until an M9-P comes up for sale, after all it is only a cosmetic change and a sliver of sticky tape and an iPhone screen protector could do essentially the same thing as you get for $1995 (plus tax).

Cosmetic upgrades on a fast depreciating digital body is not worth it. Just buy a used M9-P in good condition. Leica will still honour the sensor replacement in the event it delaminates.

Generally speaking you are correct. In my case, the used M9 I purchased was at a very good price at the time and had extremely low number of shutter actuation's. I doubt that I could find another one in similar condition. The main reason that I upgraded is that the prior owner had allowed the top and bottom cover to get a bit scratched and there were a few paint chips as well. Now the outside of the camera matches the inside condition. Since I am not one to run out and buy the latest for bragging rights, I consider my upgrade to be a good investment. I have, essentially a new camera after Leica's sensor replacement and CLA and it cost me not quite what a new one would have cost.:)

Jevidon - i initially had the same reaction as Steve. But i have come full circle and can appreciate how this can, under the right corcumstances, be a clever deal. Buy a beat up M9 for cheap (under $2500), get it upgraded to an M9-P, and either have the sensor replaced free of fcharge or have the peace of mind that some day you'll get it replaced free of charge. The result is an essentially brand new M9-P for much less than a brand new M-E.

Very clever.

You broke the code. That's why I did it. And the M9P in chrome is so nice and very old school. As an aside, the M9P retains features that are missing in the M-E, or more accurately, removed from what would otherwise be a proper Leica.
