Strange problems monochrom

Hope someone can help me with this.

Last month when I was taking pictures outside (quite cold) with my monochrom suddenly the camera would not take any picture anymore. Like the battery was dead.

Before I had the idea my batterys got empty much faster than they used to do, also compared to my M9P and M8 before. One of the batterys made the charger flickering but did charge. It was the battery which came with the monochrom (2014) or M9P (2011),

I turned it of an on and the camera did nothing. As it was a full battery I took out the battery and put it back in. Now the camera turned on again but still did not take a picture. When I turned it off again it would not turn on until I took out the battery.

What helped was formatting the memorycard. After the camera worked fine.

Today I took some shots when the camera would not take an picture any more. I took the battery in and out and the camera turned on again.

After that it would not recognice the sd card. I could take a picture and see the preview, but after that I could not see it on the card.

Also I could not format the card in the camera. The option was gray.

After comming home I changed cards and after a restart the camera works fine. I put the card into the computer and it showed only pictures I took yesterday. Not one I took today before the crash.

What I really like to know is if someone has this problems as well. Can it be a problem of the memorycard (16 gig sandisk) like we heard before with the M9, or is it a camera problem and should I send it in for repair?

I'm leaving to Sumatra in may and only want to take one camera so I don't want to risk having a broken camera.

But really hopes its a card problem......

I do not have a Leica MM, but had similar issues with a 16GB card in my M8.

First thing you could try is to not use this card for a while. Let's hope the problem does NOT occur again with an other card, then your issue is solved :)

Plan B if it happens with an other card would be to clean contacts of the card and card holder.

Good luck!

Not something that I have experienced directly but I have had some comments and warnings re memory cards. Is it a new card? I believe that some of the newer, ultra fast cards can be a problem. Mine are only SanDisk Extreme 16GB, 45MB/s which have been reliable so far.

Are you only erasing files and formatting your card in camera? I understand that doing anything to your card from a PC (other than reading files) can be a problem.

Sorry that I have nothing specific based on personal experience.

Cards DO die and there are plenty of fake cards that are less than reliable around as well. An SD card that misbehaves belongs in the rubbish bin.

Make sure that the locking slider is not (half) locked before you throw the card away.

There is no harm in formatting a card in the computer, in fact it may be beneficial, even more so if you use SDformatter, but do reformat it in the camera afterwards. That goes for a new card as well, and especially for a card that has been used in another camera. Never rely on a single card, carry spares.

In the cold a battery may shut down unexpectedly and revive in the heat. Always carry a full battery in your pocket to keep warm when out shooting in low temperatures.

Thank you all, so it might only be the SD card after all?

I have these for some time now and had no problems with my M9 and most of the time with my MM.

I took another card today and the camera works fine.

Luckily :)

So I'm gonna buy new cards. Are some brands and types recommended?

Robert, may be your problem come from memory card !

I usually use Sandisk or Kingston from 4 GB to 16 GB with no problem.

On the other hand, I always format card on my camera, but I look at my photos on my PC.

Hi Henry, thank you for the info.

I bought the 16 gig sandisk card from a big store here in the Netherlands. It worked fine for some years together with the M9p and now with the MM. So if the problems are due to the card I think its the card failing.

Thanks again. Lesson for myself I only use small size cards, 2 or 4 gig. If one fails I never loose much images.
