w44neg Posted November 27, 2014 Share #1 Posted November 27, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) So for the past two months, my M9 has been away at Leica having a new sensor fitted (white spots at high F numbers) and truth be told, I've never missed a material item SO much!!! All my friends think I'm weird lol. Anyway, today I was shopping and saw an M9-P in black, ex-display and therefore unused at a discounted price. I have another month or so before my M9 arrives back and I'm debating what to do... A) Just wait for my M9 to arrive back. It's not like there's any major difference between the M9 and M9-P anyhow Buy the M9-P as it's such a rare opportunity to find a "new" one, and sell my M9 when it returns C) another option my tired head hasn't thought of yet? I don't know what my M9 will be worth when I sell it, and therefore how much extra I would be investing in the M9-P so option B is a risk to my wallet. Manoleica Posted November 27, 2014 Share #2 Posted November 27, 2014 Hi, I reckon you have already made your decision.. I'll look out for your M9 in the For Sale section......... A miller Posted November 27, 2014 Share #3 Posted November 27, 2014 unfortunately, even an M9 that has just arrived from Leica newly serviced won't attract much. I'd say that most you could get on eBay would be 3250-3500 USD. I'm guessing the "new" M9-p is much more than this. Your M9 should come back in at least as good operating condition. And one really doesn't know what quirks the M9-P has. So I don't think it is a rational choice to sell your M9. If you do sell it, you should call Leica and ask them to be sure to seal the plastic bag that the camera comes in so that it can enhance the credibility of your sales listing. I've had camera that come back from Leica sealed as well as unsealed.
w44neg Posted November 27, 2014 Author Share #4 Posted November 27, 2014 Well there's two contrasting opinions :-D I'm thinking I should stick with my faithful M9 but the M9-P won't be going anywhere I'm sure so I have time to debate with myself. Hmmmmph.
k-hawinkler Posted November 27, 2014 Share #5 Posted November 27, 2014 Don't you think at a minimum you need two cameras?

Which other cameras do you use with your Leica glass? TIA.
ramosa Posted November 27, 2014 Share #8 Posted November 27, 2014 C) Buy a used M Monochrom, which would give you the best b&w digital camera and, when your M9 returns, the best color digital camera.
bocaburger Posted November 28, 2014 Share #9 Posted November 28, 2014 Leica has admitted that the sensor spotting is a defect of all these sensors, which replacing them does not cure forever. So I don't really see what you would be gaining by buying an M9P and selling the M9. If you had asked if you should buy an M240 and sell the M9, I would have said that dosen't sound like a bad idea.

MarkP Posted November 28, 2014 Share #11 Posted November 28, 2014 I would not waste my money. Now a Monochrom, M240, film-M, or a lens would be quite a different matter. The M9P will not take better photos.
M9reno Posted November 28, 2014 Share #12 Posted November 28, 2014 I would not have bought my M9 if I had known about its sensor defect (also applies to M9P, MM and ME). Why buy two when you already know?
wattsy Posted November 28, 2014 Share #13 Posted November 28, 2014 I certainly don't see the merit in buying the M9P when the OP's M9 will be back in a couple of months. I think the OP would be surprised how long it can take to sell an M9 at the moment and that's without taking the news about the sensor problems into account. All that said, I think it is worth remembering how good these cameras can be and which, for most people, have been largely trouble free for five years and are still entirely relevant as a contemporary digital camera. It'll be a real shame if the sensor delimitation fiasco gives all these cameras a toxic reputation.
bocaburger Posted November 28, 2014 Share #14 Posted November 28, 2014 It'll be a real shame if the sensor delimitation fiasco gives all these cameras a toxic reputation. Idk about the cameras, but it's a good thing it's Leica who has a legion of forgiving fans, because 2 high end flagship items in a row with an unforseen fatal flaw would be enough to mortally wound most small-volume high-priced niche companies.
david strachan Posted November 28, 2014 Share #15 Posted November 28, 2014 Reckon I'd rather buy another M8. My range of VC, Leica, Canon glass of different focal lengths to 15mm. Imaging from central best part of lens. Very v reliable camera, which as a brand sees little repair time in Germany (?)......I'd get a silver one in a heartbeat. A time tested sensor which prints large and sharp! And seemingly does not corrode or crack like the M9 sensors. cheers Dave S
satijntje Posted November 28, 2014 Share #16 Posted November 28, 2014 my 2 ct: buy an M8 for 1000 Euro. Use it Get your M9 back Sell your M8 for 1000 Euro Minimum losses and you keep the rangefinder feeling upright! Digital cameras are money burning machines! Good luck! david strachan Posted November 29, 2014 Share #18 Posted November 29, 2014 Unless the LCD quits, in which case it's a brick I've heard of the coffee stain..can live with, depending. But I haven't heard of LCD replacements required. I'm sure there must be some though. cheers Dave S
bocaburger Posted November 30, 2014 Share #19 Posted November 30, 2014 Complete failure of the M8's LCD is not epidemic in the way of Leica's admission about the M9-derivative sensor coating, in fact most likely there are very few LCD failures. It's merely that if it fails, Leica has no replacement units.
