richfx Posted October 28, 2014 Share #1 Posted October 28, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) A newly purchased Thumbs Up EP-1S is very loose on my MM. It has slipped out of the accessory shoe several times without any pressure applied. An earlier model fits extremely tightly on my M9, and that Thumbs Up also fits very tightly on the MM's accessory shoe. After contacting Tim Isaac at Match Technical, sending the EP-1S to him at his request and a few subsequent e-mails and calls (Tim is super responsive), he sent a new one, which he said was a bit thicker, but within factory specs / tolerance. That Thumbs Up is also loose in my MM's accessory shoe. It seems, based on all of this, that the MM's accessory shoe is noticeably looser / differently sized than my M9's, rather than the EP-1S being undersized for it. I've never used a viewfinder with my MM and don't shoot with flash, so I haven't inadvertently stretched or loosened the dimensions of its accessory shoe. Sounds like I may need to return the MM to Leica for an accessory shoe replacement (ugh - my M9 is currently in for its second sensor replacement). Has anyone else experienced this problem? Thanks, Rich
Advertisement Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 Hi richfx, Take a look here Loose Thumbs Up on MM. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Edward Louis Marit Posted October 28, 2014 Share #2 Posted October 28, 2014 It's not super loose on my MM but it is noticeably more loose than the one I have for my M240. I just cranked the set screw a little tighter. It certainly is not as loose as you describe. I frequently use the viewfinder for my tri elmar and wondered if that had contributed. Mike Lavigne Posted October 28, 2014 Share #3 Posted October 28, 2014 hummmmmm. just bought an MM and have an EP-1S on the way. my Thumbs Up is very tight on my M240. now I'm concerned. I hope you get it figured out for me.
GaryMulcahey Posted October 28, 2014 Share #4 Posted October 28, 2014 I have the version you can put a viewfinder or flash on and it is a nice tight fit. I would send it back. It is useless if it falls out.
Edward Louis Marit Posted October 28, 2014 Share #5 Posted October 28, 2014 I have the same one you do Gary. Wondering if the accessory finder which I use a lot stretched the shoe. It's not as loose as the OP describes so I just put up with it.
keithlaban.co.uk Posted October 28, 2014 Share #6 Posted October 28, 2014 I take it you guys are using the supplied screw?
NikonJeff Posted October 28, 2014 Share #7 Posted October 28, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) I take it you guys are using the supplied screw? I don't believe the EP-1S that the OP owns has a screw, perhaps you're thinking the Thumbs Up CSEP-1S that has the cold shoe?

I have to admit I'm not aware of the differences between the various models. The Thumbs Up for my M9 has a securing screw. Not sure I'd trust one without a screw, however tight the fit. A miller Posted October 28, 2014 Share #9 Posted October 28, 2014 You may want to consider a thumbs up with the hotshoe (forgot the model name) b/c it comes with a tiny allen wrench that you use to tighten the grip to the hotshoe. I use this when I use a 28mm lens as I use an exterior 28mm VF. The grip stays tight in place.
richfx Posted October 29, 2014 Author Share #10 Posted October 29, 2014 (edited) After reflection and reading everyones' posts, I think that the fault is with the new EP-1S I bought (and its replacement), rather than with the MM's accessory shoe, because my old EP-1S, used for three and a half years on my M9, is equally tight on both bodies. I say this with all due respect for Tim Isaac of Match Technical, who said he measured the original (my second) and the replacement unit (my third) sent to me. The variable here is not the MM's accessory shoe, however, but rather the two new EP-1S units, neither of which fit snugly in my MM's accessory shoe. Edward Louis Marit Posted October 29, 2014 Share #11 Posted October 29, 2014 Mine is the CSEP with the tiny set screw. The CSEP equivalent on my 240 is not loose. Apologies if I don't remember the model numbers offhand but I am at ballet school picking up my 10 year old daughter after class.
IWC Doppel Posted October 29, 2014 Share #12 Posted October 29, 2014 I have three thumbs ups and they are all slightly different, my loosest is now the tightest I simply put a small piece of sellatape around one on the edges, neatly cut with scissors. They can wear as the brass polishes
Guest NEIL-D-WILLIAMS Posted October 30, 2014 Share #13 Posted October 30, 2014 I don't know why you are all having all the problems, I just got mine and it has a grub screw to tighten it down
richfx Posted October 30, 2014 Author Share #14 Posted October 30, 2014 The EP-1S doesn't have a screw.

sblutter Posted November 8, 2014 Share #16 Posted November 8, 2014 Try a Thumbie. Lower profile = less snagging on jackets etc. + no hot shoe involvement. Surprisingly secure, 3+ yrs no problem. Great bit of design & execution. Leaves no mark if removed (e.g. for shipping to NJ ).
NikonJeff Posted November 8, 2014 Share #17 Posted November 8, 2014 That's been my experience as well. I have a Thumbie for my M9 and MM so I can use the hotshot for flash once in a while...[ QUOTE=sblutter;2817525]Try a Thumbie. Lower profile = less snagging on jackets etc. + no hot shoe involvement.
