Sensor Crack?

Noticed the top left corner artifact in my images after shooting with my M9 yesterday. The B+W is a SEP 2 conversion of the color image. Could this be a dreaded crack in the sensor?

Thanks all for the quick replies. I just examined it and you're absolutely right. See attached photo.

I'll be calling Leica NJ in the morning. I assume this is covered even after the original M9 factory warranty has expired.

Will do. I just e-mailed Mark Brady at Leica USA in NJ and will report after he reverts. I have to believe that Leica USA will do the right thing here and replace the sensor, which I assume must be replaced in toto even if the crack is only on its glass cover?

1. Sensors are factory-sealed (and that means at the Kodak or TrueSense factory, not Leica's factory). So the whole unit gets replaced.

2. I'm not sure Leica USA really has a say in the matter, since it is a manufacturing problem originally (meaning factory responsibility). They'll follow whatever the global Leica Camera AG policy is.

Tell you what, the free repair policy is great, Leica is a champ, but one reason I sold my M9 instead of keeping it as a backup was the constant threat of having it crack just when I needed it, and nothing has ever been said to the effect that replacement sensors are immune to this problem. Hopefully this is the only time the OP will ever need to deal with it.

Have you considered the statistics? On the scale of things that can happen to a camera ranging from dropping it to it being stolen to a mechanical or electronic failure, a sensor crack is surely an immensely small risk?

Idk but from what I can glean only from reading this forum' date=' reports of spontaneous sensor glass cracks seem no less prevalent than those others.[/quote']

Thats because all the people who have a Leica where it doesn't crack don't post that it didn't crack ;)

LOL true, but all the people who have a Leica where the shutter doesn't self-destruct, or the rangefinder doesn't go out of whack, or the baseplate catch doesn't break also don't post it, so it's a wash ;)
