M9: 6-7 months to replace sensor?

I took my M9 into the Hong Kong distributor today as I'd ordered an M9-P upgrade, and the parts had arrived. However, I was told that the sensor coating is 'peeling' so the camera has to go back to Germany.

I've been quoted 6-7 months. This seems like quite a long time even if Leica are out of stock so I was wondering if they're simply setting low expectations or whether 6-7 months is realistic. Does anyone have recent experience of an M9 sensor replacement leadtime ?

I'm not grizzling. The camera has been on many adventures to hot & dusty places (and has already lasted longer than several girlfriends!) so I'm happy to wait knowing it will return in good shape for more adventures.

Mine was in Wetzlar recently for a new sensor. It took exactly 3 months, including shipping and return to Leica Mayfair in London.

A colleague of mine from the press raised this 'M9 issue' with Stefan Daniel at Photokina last month and was told 'Leica had a supply issue with M9 sensors'. Beyond that, no information was forthcoming.

Good luck with the repair and upgrade.

Regards

Sounds light a splendid idea, Gordon: >>just in time<< sensor delivery and change.

Why doesn´ t LEICA CC come up with this procedure systematically ??

Much cheaper than a loaner camera. Most users don´t even realize, they are peeling ... And in the meantime, the camera

- which for VERY many is a severe investment, doesn´t sit idle.

Best

I guess it depends where u are but Leica NJ got mine done in a few days. My impression was the issue was the queue of cameras waiting for a technician rather than waiting for parts. This was at the end of June. For me at least the group there has always been responsive and responsible and pleasant to deal with

How do you tell the sensor is peeling?

The technician told me after his inspection though I had noticed some blister-like 'blobs' at small apertures.

3 months has always been the minimum.

Not sure if you are just making that up but there is plenty of anecdotal evidence to the contrary. My own M9P had a cracked sensor replaced in 5 weeks last year and most of the delay there was waiting for Leica to get stock of the sensor.

I had never read of less but thanks for the update. That's reassuring.

I delivered my M9 with cracked sensor cover to service some month ago. I hope I get it back before New Year. :)

Am I very unfortunate, or is it rather common to have cameras and lenses at service for long periods?

I am rather careful with my equipment, but never the less. This is the fourth time I require service by Leica in 3 years. Two times it has been my summicron 28/2 Asph, where the front part of the lens suddenly loosened, the last time happened this summer and I still waiting to get it back. The last thing was my summicron 75mm where the focus ring moved rather unsmooth when new. So none of the cases were due to rough treatment.

All together I have so far waited 11 month to get things back, with two items still to be ready and delivered.

I wish others equally unfortunate the best of luck!

My M9 needed a sensor right out of the box. I think it was in NJ for about 7 weeks despite telling them I'm a professional and needed it for work. I'm sad to say my camera and several lenses had to go back 4 times until I finally got sick of having it in the shop all the time and sold everything. I don't think I ever received it back in less than 7 weeks and often longer.

My camera had a strange issue with my 90 apo asph. Logically it shouldn't have happened but it did. For some reason my 90 wouldn't focus on my M9 all the time. Some times it would and other times it wouldn't. Leica NJ had it twice for months at a time and never got it resolved. All other lenses focused correctly on my M9 but this lens wouldn't. On my M2 and MP it focused properly. On the M9 when I focused on the house across the street 200 yards it was actually focusing at about half the distance. I finally had to threaten NJ and got the lens replaced. After that I never had another problem.

Likewise with the rest here I took my M9 in to Mayfair for a sensor clean it came back 3 months later with a new sensor. Same issue as the original person posting here the coating was peeling. I could see a problem looking at the sensor myself the colours on the surface looked uneven and it wa producing spots all over the photos. Replacement was free of charge of course

Hmmm. I had my M9 in for a calibration two months ago. Got told the coating was damaged. It took three weeks for the part to arrive from Germany (and I had my camera during that time) and three weeks for the sensor change. Ready to pick up last week.

Gordon

Hi Gordon, just out of interest, the actual replacement work was done for you in Australia then?
