Why would they want to replace it? According to that interview with Alfred Schopf, the camera is an unexpectedly hot seller (300-350/month, which is hot by Leica standards).

It isn’t delayed; it is just that this isn’t the time for a new M-E. When Leica introduces the next M (maybe next year, I don’t really know) it will most likely be accompanied by an M-E (Typ 240) that is basically an M (Typ 240). Just like the current M-E (Typ 220) is basically an M9. The rumour about the supposed introduction of a new M-E at photokina has never been more than a figment of the imagination, just like the rumours about a new M Monochrom.
