Shutter lag question

Let me start by saying I am not rich. Ok. So I plan on buying a monochrom real soon. I sold all my nikon gear to help fund it. Now I only have two concerns.

The first one is the shutter lag on the monochrom. From what I read there is none. Something of 0.07 or something like that. What I want to know is, how does that compare do any of the film leica cameras? I currently shoot with a M6 TTL, and it has a super snappy shutter that you can take a shot accidentally if not careful. I love it. Now I also have a fuji xpro-1. There is a noticeable shutter lag. Nothing serious, but when comparing to the mechanical joy of the M6, its day and night. With the fuji after the shot there is a questionable thought if it took the shot a millisecond later then I wanted it to. Sounds silly I know, but thats how I am.

Second, rumors of a monochrom 240 being announced at photokina. If this is true, How long till it is released to the public? Because I hate waiting, and if it's going to be something like fall 2015 I'm buying the current model.

I lied. Third question. How is the battery life? I read about 400 shots. What about if you keep the camera on all day while walking around? Or is that 400 shots, turning the camera off while walking around?

So as I said I am not rich, so these concerns are great to me, cause I would hate to spend $8k and be disappointed.

Thanks.

Hi Jon,

I'm not rich eaither, but the Monochrom is one of the best purchases I have made - I would trade all my other gear if I had to (well, maybe not my MP!). I actually sold all my other gear to fund a M9-P and then saw the results from the MM and just had to have one. My wife does not understand, but I have few other vices.

Compared to the MP, I don't notice any shutter lag, honestly, it just fires when you press the tit.

Compared to my XE-1, the Fuji is slower - it has to focus. even in good light, there is a very small lag. The latest Fuji is supposed to be quicker, but I don't have one. Compared to my NEX 5n, the Fuji is very quick (as in much quicker).

Is there a new Monochrom coming? Who knows. When I spoke to the expert at Richard Caplan, I got the impression that there is not. They were at pains to point out the difference in the sensor (CCD vs. CMOS) and the quality that the CCD brings, even if a lower pixel count. I don't have a 240 to compare, so it's academic for me :)

Battery life? Well, I took it to the Chelsea flower show and shot over 250 in one day (RAW only) with 40% battery left. that was switching off when I knew I would not be shooting for a while (eating, etc), otherwise I let the camera go into standby. On that basis, 400 sounds reasonable, depending on how you shoot.

I can't decide for you, but I doubt you would be dissappointed with the MM as it is - given Moore's Law, there will always be the next big thing just over the horizon. You have to decide when to jump in :D

That is what the FAQ is for.....

Don't believe all rumours. There is no indication of a MM240. And even in the event of an unlikely surprise, it will still leave the current Monochrom a classic which many will prefer because of the way the sensor renders.

And just pop one or two batteries in your pocket. A good idea with any battery-dependent camera.

More noisy, especially the rewind ( but so is the winder on the M6 if you fit it). It does not bother me, it sounds, for want of a better word, authorative.

The shutter lag, as you see, is minimal and you should not notice in normal use.

Compared to Nikon the shutter is dead-silent ;) I really like the sound, but I cannot compare to the M6 or M240, which some say is even less noisy.

I have no problem carrying the camera around for weeks and take some photos without changing the battery. It goes to standby after some time, even if switched on, so there is very low battery consumption if you don't use the screen or write to the SD-card.

John, I did not see your post at first. You answered my question. Thank you. Every one else too, Thank you for your input! I am very pleased by your responses and have no doubt in my mind now.

Hopefully if all goes well I will own one with in a week or so. Just waiting for ebay and paypal to clear my money from selling all my nikon gear.

I have been lusting after this camera ever sense it came out.

Thanks again every one. :)

I assume the MM has the same battery management that my M9/M-E has and its one of the features I really like about my M-E.

I leave my camera most all the time and have the power management setup to sleep after one minute. If the camera is around my neck or I'm taking it out of my bag, a light touch on the shutter release turns the camera on and by the time I have the camera up to my face it is ready.

I can shoot all day with one battery but I do keep a backup with me all the time.

400 shots is a lot of pictures for me.

yea my xpro-1 has the same feature. i still turn the camera off though, just cause im afraid the battery will die, and a "kodak moment" will happen. also yea 400 shots is allot. especially with a rangefinder. a dslr i could easily snap away 400 shots if i was walking around the city the whole day. with a rangefinder, im more careful and selective of my shots.

I would definitely pick up a spare battery if you are worried about mileage. It's probably the first accessory on everyone's list.

Is also look at picking up a protector case which will help preserve the finish of the camera as well as improve grip.

Lastly, I would make sure you get insurance which is probably easiest to arrange through your home contents policy.
