Chuck68 Posted July 16, 2014 Share #1 Posted July 16, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Dear All, Is it possible to upgrade the ME to M9-P via the upgrade plan. I assume top and bottom plates are the same, getting a bit sea sick with the green and want some chrome like my old M8 Thanks S
Advertisement Posted July 16, 2014 Posted July 16, 2014 Hi Chuck68, Take a look here M9-P upgrade Program for ME. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
bocaburger Posted July 17, 2014 Share #2 Posted July 17, 2014 I would think it might be better economics in the long run to source a new-unsold M9P (if possible) and sell the ME?
Jeff S Posted July 17, 2014 Share #3 Posted July 17, 2014 Also consider feasibility/cost of adding frame preview lever and USB port, both part of a true M9-P. A call to Leica may well lead to above sale solution. Jeff
Erik Gunst Lund Posted July 17, 2014 Share #4 Posted July 17, 2014 Just send an email to customer service at Leica. I'm sure the answer is: No it's not possible.
bernd_muc Posted July 18, 2014 Share #5 Posted July 18, 2014 Also consider feasibility/cost of adding frame preview lever and USB portNobody* needs that but black top and bottom casings/plates - maybe even without dot - would be nice. Bernd * in the sense of "almost nobody"
Jeff S Posted July 18, 2014 Share #6 Posted July 18, 2014 (edited) Nobody* needs that but black top and bottom casings/plates - maybe even without dot - would be nice. Bernd * in the sense of "almost nobody" That's not the point. OP asked about upgrade to an M9-P, and it has those items. Without them it's not an M9-P and couldn't be sold as one. More like an M-E-P. marknorton Posted July 18, 2014 Share #8 Posted July 18, 2014 It was always a very strange choice of colour. I agree the answer will be certainly, no, it's not possible. As the saying goes in England, "you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear".
DigitalHeMan Posted July 18, 2014 Share #9 Posted July 18, 2014 It was always a very strange choice of colour. I agree the answer will be certainly, no, it's not possible. As the saying goes in England, "you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear". Technically it shouldn't cause any problems though. The only physical differences are the lack of USB and frame selector, both of which are on the main body. 'All' that would need to be done is to take a top cover from an MM or an M9-P, and a base plate from any M9, and rebuild the camera into that. So whilst physically possible, I'm sure it would be a very expensive exercise....
DigitalHeMan Posted July 18, 2014 Share #10 Posted July 18, 2014 Personally I don't mind the color oft M-E. Although it gets a fair amount of attention from other Leica owners, the general public couldn't care less.
Chuck68 Posted July 18, 2014 Author Share #11 Posted July 18, 2014 Thanks to all, where I am a used M9-P is about 15% more expensive than a used M at the moment which is what prompted the question, maybe better to just buy an M instead S

That's what I got back: The Upgrade to the top and base plate of the M9-P is only available for the M9.
Ted Lemon Posted July 20, 2014 Share #13 Posted July 20, 2014 I've asked the same question to Leica. That's what I got back:The Upgrade to the top and base plate of the M9-P is only available for the M9. I just stuck my (exchanged) M8 accessory base plate with hand grip onto the ME (the original M8 baseplate went back in the exchange). So I just have a grey top plate. Looks fine. jaapv Posted July 20, 2014 Share #14 Posted July 20, 2014 I have no idea whether the top plate of the ME is identical to the M9 on the inside, but there are one or two tops out there due to the upgrade program. Try and find one or irreparable camera.

Having a black bottom and only grey at the top is quite an improvement IMHO

sblutter Posted July 20, 2014 Share #17 Posted July 20, 2014 2 days ago I emailed Leica NJ for a price on just replacing the LCD cover with sapphire glass on my M-E, which I really like on my upgraded 9 Will report back if / when I hear anything. I thought of finding an M9P but prefer buying brand new (other than lenses) As for the 240, no discernible IQ improvement and love the 9's results - tho lately, LV for critical focus is beginning to beckon. Noooo!
jonogilmour Posted July 23, 2014 Share #18 Posted July 23, 2014 I really enjoy the grey of my M-E, it's unique. Personally, having now held a black M9 in my hands, I find the black colour to be a little ugly. If I had to choose another colour, I'd go with chrome for the classic looks. It's like when I bought my X-E1, and foolishly went for black. Wish I'd bought the silver instead, but when the camera is up to your eye the colour doesn't matter. I also don't have a use for a sapphire screen. Of course it would be nice, but I'd still put a screen protector on it anyway, so I wouldn't spend hundreds on it. The only thing I would ever improve about my M-E would be to upgrade the shutter to a quieter one, like on the 240, that's it, and that's not possible. nelly Posted July 24, 2014 Share #19 Posted July 24, 2014 IMO just use the camera and don't get so hung up on Leica cosmetics All this thought would be better spent trying to create more interesting photographs And use the cash you save making these changes to invest in another Leica Lens, a far wiser investment. sblutter Posted August 9, 2014 Share #20 Posted August 9, 2014 Having both an upgraded M9P (sapphire only) and an M-E, guess which one hits the street most often? I let the orig M9 screen get overly scratched, was grateful for the upgrade program. Would pay to have the M-E's screen swapped in a minute (the protector makes it hard to see, espec outdoors). Leica is apparently not letting those parts out to even authorized repair shops (yet?).
