Too early to speculate on the next M?

Anyone have any news?

I'm still very happy w M9P & M-E. Am hoping they stick to their roots and just update those & maintain form factor:

ISO, write speed, file size, sapphire glass, weather seals etc. would open my wallet. I passed on the 240, IQ at best the same to me, after scrutinizing sample files.

FWIW Leicarumors reported yesterday a rumored replacement M-E in September with same sensor but with updated LCD and better battery. If true, it could be a smart move on Leica's part by appealing to those who remain convinced the M9/M-E CCD sensor had/has something special to offer. Some have called for keeping the CCD alive so maybe this is a nod in that direction…?

Maybe your hope remains alive!

I'll sell my M240 if they make a CCD M. The M240 body with a CCD would be my 'perfect' M.

I hope it's soon! I would love to pick up an M (240) to replace my M-E, but I can't do it until something new comes out to push the current price down on the used market. :)

Assuming a standard 3 year product cycle the successor of the M (Typ 240) would be announced around September 2015, probably coinciding with the announcement of the next M-E. The latter would be a slightly simplified version of the M (Typ 240), just like the current M-E is a simplified version of the M9. And that would spell the end of the CCD sensor as far as Leica is concerned.

Hmmm... It seems that some folks here are discontented with the sensor in the M240. Mine (both M240 and its sensor) have been above reproach so far.

Why all the longing for an M240 with a CCD sensor?

I'm don't think I would buy an M with a 7-8 year old CCD that has been quite problematic for Leica. All of the issues with cracking and delaminating give me second thoughts. We're not talking about a $200 p&s. I'm not even sure if the sensor is still in production and small runs just for Leica would be cost prohibitive.

My guess is the new M-E would be a 240 sensor based camera. No video, no EVF hot shoe, no led illuminated frame lines. Maybe no live view, I can live without LV, but it does come in handy sometimes.

But I would welcome the increased dynamic range, faster processing, bigger buffer, improved shutter release, better battery life, weather sealing, increased reliability etc. I just don't need all the 240 wiz bang video features and such.

Get rid of the red line issue so we can click off hot or dead pixels without a service dept .

Use the nice electronic menu of the T.

CMOS sensor is a nice improvement for high ISO. Wonders can be done with the CCD at high iso if you use color noise reduction first, then luminosity. Just a hint.

Hey, and the MM ?? CMOSed too in due time ?

(but, if they have a source to provide support for M9 for some years to come, maybe MM can live as is....)

As for me, I hope to cross 2020 with my 240... so better if firmware update(s) do arrive

Wow! Has 10 years gone by already?

Why all the longing for an M240 with a CCD sensor?

Looking back at my image library since 2010 when I first got the M9...and then my subsequent images taken with the S2 and later the M240...I still have a preference for the CCD images, even though I acknowledge all the advantages of the M240, especially higher dynamic range, better high ISO performance etc. My interpretation of the CCD advantage is that when you get the exposure right and don't stretch the chip beyond its capabilities, the images have great contrast and colour, without much need for post-processing. The M240 is more universally capable and can deliver in situations where an M9 would not cope, but the best images from it don't excite me as much as those from the M9/S2.

I no longer own the M9 or the M240 though; the small camera duty has been taken by a Fuji XT. I would very probably buy the rumoured ME2 if it had the new battery, LCD screen and a new processor allowing use of faster and larger SD cards. But I don't believe they will introduce it at Photokina; makes little sense commercially. Time to get on with the CMOS technology (or buy an ME while they still make them).

That's interesting.. I went the opposite route.. I had an XT first and the got an M-E. Now my XT-1 collects dust for the most part. We should've just traded! ;)

There will be a CMOS-based M Monochrom sooner or later.

I hear that all around and with the price of the MM on the second hand market hovering around $6,000 in the US, one might think so. But is there a market for a 'niche-within-a-niche' or could the MM be a one-off exercise?

There was talk of an a7M for a while there; that would indeed be a wondrous thing and preferred to a MM CMOS.

If anyone can be profitable in a niche market that would be Leica, and as the M Monochrom did exceed their expectations I wouldn’t be at all surprised if they did it again.

  • 3 weeks later...
  • 1 month later...

In september 2009 we had the Leica M9 then in 2011 the M9-P

In september 2012 we had the Leica M (240) and few days ago the M-P

Thus we can expect to see the next Leica M in september 2015.

Now the question is what are we looking for ?

- hybrid viewfinder to switch quickly between rangefinder frame view and TTL view

- or the same EVF plug system as the Leica T

- bigger viewfinder (useful when you have glasses) with variable magnification (usefull for tele and ultra-wide lenses)

- better ISO, IQ, Auto white balance etc...

- thinner and lighter body

- an electronic rangefinder system for better focus

- touch screen like Leica T

- double wheel like Leica T

In fact I think the modern Leica T concept is really interesting and could be apply to the next M. Obviously, Leica owners are very conservative and Leica should offer 2 leica M : a modern and a classic version with different ergonomics but the same stuff inside.

Perhap's can we give to leica our wishing list for the next M ;-)

.... Leica owners are very conservative ...

I think this is a myth. Some Leica owners are conservative and some are not. It must be the same with dog owners: some are conservative and some are not, even though some kinds of dogs are quite old. So are some owners, of course. :D

FWIW, I bought my first "real" Leica, i.e. my rangefinder camera, in my late fifties, having used SLRs, compacts, bridges, compacts and whatnot, with and without autofocus before. I finally chose to afford a camera with a rangefinder for its function and not for some historical reasons.

This does not mean, of course, that I am not interested in new kinds of focusing aids, but they must have a perceivable advantage over what I now have.
