The new sandisk card for MONOCHROM?

Leica recommends 8gb cards, so buy a couple...they are pretty cheap now days. I have found the Panasonic gold cards to handle banding the best in the MM.

thank you 2W,

I haven't had any banding issues yet, is that a common problem? did you mean buffering , the writing speed?

I doubt a faster card would help -- the bottleneck is the speed of the Monochrom's processor. I haven't noticed much difference in the speed of the buffer clearing between (for example) SanDisk Extreme and Extreme Pro cards. I think the 250 MB/sec cards will work with video and other cameras that have the processing speed to match that capacity. But I'm no expert.

I meant banding in the shadow areas when you push a few stops, or underexpose. Some cards are a lot worse regarding this than others.

Hi,

The banding is not a function of the card, it is the camera that is creating the banding. The card is just a repository for digital data, it is the camera that is creating that data, banding and all.

Fwiw fast cards don't make a difference in speed, the camera CPU/bus is the limiting factor. I am also a panasonic gold user.

Cheers

I always use 8gb cards because if you use large capacity cards and it fails, you will have lost an awful lot of photos. Limit your potential losses by using more of the smaller capacity cards. Even 4gb cards aren't unreasonable; you just have to change them more often. Imagine if you were using film: it would be a lot better to lose 1 or 2 rolls than the whole bag!

I have a Fuji 32gb card in my MM at the moment, but it has worked fine with 16gb SanDisk Extreme as well.

Why 32gb? Habit I guess. I have always put one extra dark slide in the camera bag, or four extra rolls of film, so when it comes to digital I just double up (and then double up again) on the maximum I'm likely to use. After each day all the pictures are uploaded to the PC, so if something failed I'd still only loose the same number of pictures that would have been on a 8gb card. But with 32gb I'd be ready for that '32gb moment', when I'm the only photographer around when aliens land, or William and Kate join the queue just behind me at the chip shop, or when I stumble across a lost valley of golden temples while making a detour to Sainsbury's. So it's just an ex-press photographers innate insecurity of running out of film, besides which I might do some video with the aliens.

I never go beyond a 16 Gb card in the M9 or the Monochrom. These huge sizes make no sense to me. Just a waste of money with no advantage imo. Panasonic gold.

I use cards like film. 8 and 16's are what I use too.

The only advantage to faster cards are when you download the images to your computer. That is if you have a fast card reader.

If my memory serves me right before I try to link to Leica's FAQ on the M9/M-E/Mono SD cards, the camera can only write at around 19mb/s. It's an internal electronics issue not the card.

besides the "speed" that might work counterproductive ( faster isn't always better, especially not in combination with a "slow system") ... 64 Gb is a lot of pictures that you can loose when your card gets corrupt/lost ...
