Buying a second hand M9 or M-E

I have two options – a mint condition M9 that is 4 years old with 4000 actions or an M-E, also mint, that is probably a year old with 750 actions. The USB socket and frame preview lever are not important to me. I would only save £300 buying the M9. I suppose the M-E makes sense – what do you think?

It depends upon how much the £300 is worth to you. The M-E will be warrantied by Leica for another year which might be important to you. An M9 with 4000 actuations is only just "run-in" so will have plenty of life left in it.

I have an M-E and an M6. Last year the frame line preview on my M6 went out (stuck on the 50/75 frame lines) and I sent it to NJ who fixed it did a CLA. I'm glad my M-E doesn't have a frame line preview, that's one less thing that will need repairs in the future. That being said I would still take an M9P over my M-E, just b/c I like the look of the M9P over the M-E. Sorry, I'm no help at all...

I was looking at the same decision about a month ago, although I couldn't find any used M-E's at any meaningful discount from full retail, and the used M9-P's I found listed were priced about the same, or more, as a new M-E. So, thinking of the warranty, I purchased a new M-E.

Your deal may have different economics than mine.

I'd choose based on what you prefer visually and how long you intend to keep the camera, In suspect a used M9-||P will hold it's value better than a newer M-E for example.

It's very occasional I use my frame line preview and I have never used the USB socket

If its bought from a shop you should have some warranty with it

I suspect the most important difference between a M-E and a M9-P is the sapphire LCD screen on the M9-P, much more resistant to scratching. Then the appearance, the M-E is rather plain. Operationally they've got the same innards.

Test both if possible and check the rangefinder alignment !

Bought a "mint" M9 with 800 actuations recently and the rangefinder was completely out of specs... got is sorted but it took me a while !

I'd go for the M-E if it's still under warranty.

+1 for the M-E.

It looks like these 2 are on Aperture's website at the moment. And the guys at Aperture are a good bunch. 12 month warranty with used Leica.

+++ for the ME,,,bought mine 6 month back and love it....had the same thoughts, but the m9 was much cheaper than ME that time.... Even though I decided to buy the ME with full warranty:rolleyes:...never regret

Completely agree with the above. Only difference is my new M-E was bought 9 months ago. And the grey finish really grows on you.

A few weeks ago I have made the choice between a used M9P with 1700 clicks and 1 year warranty and a new ME "ausstellungsmodell" with only 3 clicks , two years warranty from Leica for exact the same price. I choose the ME for that two years warranty. The M9p looks better, but the ME is also a beautiful camera.

Thank you all for your comments. I went for the M-E (it was the one in Aperture I had been thinking of). I wonder if my other half will notice the difference between the M-E and my X-Pro 1 which I am now putting on Ebay!

Congratulations!

And good luck with your other half, I fear the grey will reveal your treachery. :p

It is so nice to be back on a Leica. It is so simple to use. I need to sort out a diopter but ithe M-E is still very nice to focus. I am also going to sell off most of my canon gear so at least the other half won't need to lug that around any more! I will need to get something wider than 50mm at some point but will wait a month or two for that. I like 21mm but not sure how well the 21mm Elmartit-M lens does on digital Leicas and I definitely can't afford the f4 super Elmar-M at the moment.
