Should I keep my used m9

Hi, I just want some opinion from you folks about keeping my m9 or sell it since I also have m 240 as well. Still, I'm afraid that if I keep it any longer will the price going to decrease in the future. Since I only using leica for about a year so I have no clue about the long term market price for Leica. So any advice would be appreciate,by the way I'm fond of both m9 and m240. They are different but they both shoot an extraordinary image. Thanks!

Ordinarily I'd advise you to keep anything Leica, but if you are concerned about the M9 losing value, as most digital cameras do, then I'd sell it now.

Well, to tell you the truth, I have the lens I need already. Still, from your record if I hold on to my m9 any further .Will there's a chance that it will even go lower and lower? Thanks

It's a certainty that the M9 will drop in value, that's what happens to digital cameras as they fall further 'out of date', even thought the M9 is essentially the same as the current ME.

 

On the other hand, Leica lenses often increase in value over time.

 

Of course if you have no need for camera or lens then use the money for something else or stick it in the bank!

Thanks mate! Seems like a fair choice to me anyway. I'm thinking about pre order the 50mm apo cron ASPH f2.0.

Sold my M9 yesterday. I find that switching between the M9 and M240 can be very confusing. Moreover, my M9 stays most of its time in my Drybox after I bought my M240 just about a month ago. I am not a collector so its no point for me to keep it even as a spare camera (I used my DLux-5 as my spare and back-up - waiting for the DLux-7 ??)

Those who say the price will decline are almost certainly correct.

 

In three years' time, it will likely be worth what the M8 is worth to-day, give or take inflation. So keeping it for three years would cost you, very roughly, £400 a year.

 

 

But ...

 

 

 

... although its price will decline, its value will not. And there are good reasons for having a second camera body:

1. If you are the family photography nut, and cannot avoid tasks like photographing a wedding for an impecunious family member, then you must take a second camera body to the gig.
   
2. If you want to photograph your grandson playing soccer (modify this need to match your own age and nationality) then you will benefit enormously from having a camera body hanging at each hip -- one with a telephoto and one with a wide-angle. You'll never have time to change lens.
   
3. The same holds for other outdoor events -- family garden parties, classic car meets, or what have you -- where the ability to pull up a camera body with a wide-angle at zero notice is useful.
   
4. I'm told that the need to have a second body loaded with landscape film, or black-and-white, no longer applies.
   

Whether any reason like one of these justifies keeping a second camera body is inevitability a personal decision.

Unlike the days with my film Ms, I wouldn't take an extended trip with my new M, or any digital camera, without a back-up body. An M8.2 suffices; my second M8.2 was sold. YMMV.

I agree with James, sell it and put the money in a lens which will more likely increase in value. If you're not using the M9 then it seems pointless since prices are dropping on them quite a lot.

May I also ask something from your perspective after shooting with m240 with new firmware. compare to m9. Maybe because I'm just a newbie to Leica and not much experience with shooting out door. I just wondering what do you guys think about the tone of color compare to m9? and will a further new firmware in the near future can fix this issue.

All the FW does is give you a different starting point. If you make custom profiles and learn to use your software (e.g., LR) effectively, you should be able to closely match output.

 

But, in reality, every shot is different and you're unlikely to be shooting the same scene with 2 cameras, so the only question is whether you can get the look you want for a given scene. I don't see either camera as the limiting factor.

Easy to set a profile, shoot a wb card, and sync edits on a group of photos as needed.

In reply to your first question, I think M9 market value has already dropped quite a bit. But, it will drift lower still, and when the M240P/ M360 is announced, M9 will go down further. I much prefer the M240 to M9 in all respects, so my view would be to sell very soon and buy a lens (now or later).

 

I have found the new FW (2.000 whatever it is) to be a very noticeable softening of color hues and correction of auto WB. If you felt M240 skin tones were awkward before, I believe you will find the new FW to be similar to the M9 look.

 

The 50 APO ASPH is spectacular, corner to diagonally opposed corner, wide open. BUT, if you like the smoothness of Noctilux or 35 FLE, watch out. Color rendition in low light is very nuanced. The 50 AA is an unmatched razor. Some shooters find the lens to be too accurate and uniform, so they say the lens is transparent. Well, that is baloney because at f/2, or so, the lens has beautiful separation between focus plane and everything else... that drawing is entirely different than the notion of "transparency" suggested as an equivalent to visual perception.

Sorry, my comment was only to allude to the inevitable model iterations for the M (type xxx), including Professional, Meisterstueck, Hermes, friends of Andreas, etc. I imagine the basic M240 specification will be around for at least a couple of years yet because it is so good, demand continues to exceed supply and Leica is about to open a new manufacturing plant. The latter point will take at least one year to get right, if things go very well. Leica has also expanded its distribution system worldwide (les boutiques Leica), so they have a lot of shelves to fill.

 

The only information I have from Leica is that the Noctilux I just purchased was assembled this past April... and no 28 f/1.4 announcement yet .

The M9 will for sure drop in value once the M240 starts to become more available.

It will drop even further, when the M240 P without the red dot arrives!
