shootinglulu Posted July 9, 2013 Share #1 Posted July 9, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello!..It's me back in Leica land with a possible problem:confused:... I recieved my new/ex demo M9 today..In discreet mode the shutter can take about 5 seconds to complete it's click and this is happening with 1 in 10 clicks.I changed to the soft mode and this hasn't happened, yet, after about 30 clicks but the fact that it happens at all is ruining my day!! Does the camera have to go back to Solms I wonder?..Any advice would be very appreciated..Thanks!

jaapv Posted July 9, 2013 Share #2 Posted July 9, 2013 In discrete mode the shutter only completes its cycle when you lift your finger from the shutter button.
shootinglulu Posted July 9, 2013 Author Share #3 Posted July 9, 2013 Thanks Jaap..I'm not leaving my finger on the shutter button at all though.
elgenper Posted July 9, 2013 Share #4 Posted July 9, 2013 While Jaap´s observation is correct, there seems to be more to it than that. When one of the strap lugs on my M9 came loose and went to Solms, it came back with the latest firmware 1.196 installed (I had stayed with 1.176 while I had it). And, the same thing started happening to it: occasionally severely delayed recocking in the discrete mode. I´ve used the camera daily for 3 years, always in the discrete mode, so lifting the finger is automatic for me; that wasn´t the cause. Also, the camera now insisted on turning off as soon as the battery level went below 50%, with all my 3 original batteries (I think this is a known effect of the FW upgrade?). So when I had accumulated enough anger, I got the old FW install file on a card, and went through the usual FW upgrade procedure. It worked without a hitch (but took more than twice as long as usual for an upgrade, so I guess it had to rewrite the entire FW instead of just patching it). So now the camera is back at 1.176 again. Discrete mode works as intended all the time, and the batteries work down to less than 25%, with no ill effects at all.

Same with me: Solms returned my M9 with the "uptodate" firmware which I downgraded before. Now at 1.196 its the delayed recocking plus the battery issue. I shall downgrade again. bybrett Posted July 9, 2013 Share #7 Posted July 9, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) This is a known bug in FW1.196 together with inoperative highlight clipping. Leica have known about this for almost a year but have still shipped every M-E with these bugs. I wonder if the M9 will ever get finished.

jaapv Posted July 11, 2013 Share #11 Posted July 11, 2013 (edited) In the Leica M9 FAQ at the top of this subforum. All older firmwares are linked. http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m9-forum/130720-leica-m8-m8-2-m9-m9p-2.html#post2285118 It is unlikely, btw, that you will be able to revert to 1.162 Edited July 11, 2013 by jaapv

jaapv Posted July 11, 2013 Share #14 Posted July 11, 2013 There was a point beyond which you cannot revert.
Phil U Posted July 11, 2013 Share #15 Posted July 11, 2013 Interesting. But how would that work? I think you are saying that if you have moved to 1.196 then there is something in that firmware which prevents you going back to 1.162 or earlier. But we know you can get back to 1.176 as people have done that. When 1.176 was first released a lot of people felt the write speeds were slower and so they went back to 1.162 successfully. So it was certainly possible to get back to 1.162 from 1.176. So once you have reverted to 1.176 from 1.196, what is to stop you getting back to 1.162 as you could previously? Are you suggesting that 1.196 makes a permanent change to the firmware of the M9 that remains even after reverting to 1.176?
Stealth3kpl Posted July 21, 2013 Share #16 Posted July 21, 2013 I'm glad I found this thread. I've just "downgraded" to 1.176. Discreet/soft is good. I've been too frightened to use it on the latest firmware version. Pete
geotrupede Posted July 21, 2013 Share #17 Posted July 21, 2013 same issue here. I found a trick that helps when the shutter is stuck and the finger has already left: half press the release again and the shutter will start to reload immediately. hope it helps, for me it works 100% G
