jffielde Posted March 20, 2013 Share #1 Posted March 20, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Would any pixel peepers mind confirming that the Compressed DNG files are actually lossless? It sounds like using compressed DNG files doubles the buffer capacity, but that would only be an option for me if the quality is identical. Thanks. Advertisement Posted March 20, 2013 Posted March 20, 2013 Hi jffielde, Take a look here Leica M(240) Lossless Compression?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
01af Posted March 20, 2013 Share #2 Posted March 20, 2013 Would any pixel peeper's mind confirm that the Compressed DNG files are actually lossless? Yes, they are. The compression algorithm is totally different from the previous, lossy method. The lossy method compresses to exactly 50 % size always, regardless of image content, and required only a tiny amount of computing power. The lossless method compresses to, say, 40 - 80 % of the original size, depending on the image content, and requires quite some CPU power (which the Maestro image processor now graciously provides).

dasjak Posted March 20, 2013 Share #4 Posted March 20, 2013 so why is there even uncompressed DNG if compressed outputs the same quality/file?!
01af Posted March 20, 2013 Share #5 Posted March 20, 2013 So why is there even uncompressed DNG if compressed outputs the same quality/file?! Because otherwise, some would complain.

theno23 Posted March 23, 2013 Share #7 Posted March 23, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Possibly also some earlier software can't load impressed DNG? I think it was added to the spec at some point. - Steve
