Advertisement Posted August 2, 2011 Posted August 2, 2011 Hi dfarkas, Take a look here Leica M9 Upgrade Program. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
tele_player Posted August 2, 2011 Share #2 Posted August 2, 2011 If it was 50% less, I'd do it. I'd love the extra warranty, and the chrome - but sapphire glass is a foolish expense, in my opinion. Viv Posted August 2, 2011 Share #3 Posted August 2, 2011 Nice package, but price too high.
andybarton Posted August 2, 2011 Share #4 Posted August 2, 2011 For £800, you get a saphire screen, a new covering and a one year warranty extension, worth £300. So, the saphire screen and covering costs you about £500, which is more or less what the premium was in M8 days, IIRC. You will, no doubt, get the camera looked at throughout, so that Leica can offer the one year's additional warranty. After all, they wouldn't warranty a camera that was likely to fail in the warranty period. That doesn't look like too bad value to me.
bbbonthemoon Posted August 2, 2011 Share #5 Posted August 2, 2011 I better wait for M10, rumored to be announced in 2012

jaapv Posted August 2, 2011 Share #7 Posted August 2, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) We don't need a rehash of Mr Daniel's statements for that rumour. And the specifications of the M10 are not known yet. The way the M9 is now, I would not be surprised if it would remain the preferred camera of many. I am not saving up for it anyway. I will upgrade my worn M9 and be happy
Jase Posted August 2, 2011 Share #8 Posted August 2, 2011 hmm so for only $100 more than a new Fuji X100 or the same price as a new Canon 60D with the kit lens you can get the sapphire screen that they left off the M9 so there would be an update path. Of course the sapphire screen must have cost all of $2 to produce and it must take at least 3 minutes to fit it.

delander † Posted August 2, 2011 Share #11 Posted August 2, 2011 For the price quoted I think I would rather sell my M9 and buy a new M9-P. However, I did not indulge in the M8 upgrade, so I'll wait for the M10 or just keep the M9. Jeff
Jase Posted August 2, 2011 Share #12 Posted August 2, 2011 That must be the fastest technician of the world. Fitting the screen entails disassembling the camera completely... Maybe you are right and it takes him 10 minutes but as the technician earns $7,794 per hour really this is all being done at cost and not really a complete rip-off after all.
andybarton Posted August 2, 2011 Share #13 Posted August 2, 2011 Simple. If you think it's a rip-off, don't buy the upgrade.
tele_player Posted August 2, 2011 Share #14 Posted August 2, 2011 Sapphire is crazy expensive, I expect it costs Leica several hundred dollars PER screen. hmm so for only $100 more than a new Fuji X100 or the same price as a new Canon 60D with the kit lens you can get the sapphire screen that they left off the M9 so there would be an update path. andalus Posted August 2, 2011 Share #15 Posted August 2, 2011 If you buy almost anything of quality and in demand, like the M9, or even the upgrade, you are NOT spending money. You are just putting ever less valuable Federal Reserve notes, fiat paper, into something tangible and real that will be MORE valuable when a monetary crisis occurs, and it will. BUY quality stuff that you use now. It's better than $ in some corrupt bank.
Dabow Posted August 2, 2011 Share #16 Posted August 2, 2011 I wonder how many technicians will be taken off the lens production line to cater for these cosmetic and functionally unnecessary niceties? When will Leica start catering properly for the needs of photographers as opposed to those who just want their camera to look good?
andybarton Posted August 2, 2011 Share #17 Posted August 2, 2011 None.
bocaburger Posted August 2, 2011 Share #18 Posted August 2, 2011 Ok, for $1995US I can have my M9 upgraded to M9P cosmetics, but by the serial# it's still and forever an M9, and get a one-year warranty. If OTOH I sell my M9 for let's say $6000 (and I see them going for more than that) and add $1995 forward, I can get a "real" M9P with a 2-year warranty. Even if I only got $5000 for the M9 in resale, there's still a full extra year warranty and the fact an M9P will always be worth more on resale than an M9U. So I'm puzzled as to why anyone would go the upgrade route unless maybe their M9 was really in beater condition
Dabow Posted August 2, 2011 Share #19 Posted August 2, 2011 None. Then suggest they train those doing the cosmetics to do something more worthwhile, like produce lenses.
stunsworth Posted August 2, 2011 Share #20 Posted August 2, 2011 If you don't want it don't buy it. If you do, do.
