"The first Leica Forum Firmware Beta Test is finished! About 40 forum members tested two beta versions of the new LEICA M9 Firmware and thus helped to improve the quality. Primary purpose of this release was to minimize the "red corners" showing up incidentally.

The first beta version (1.158) included an overcorrection for some lenses but Leica provided a new optimized version (1.160) which is a great improvement according to all testers. This version now runs through the final quality check in Solms and will be released within the next few days."

I am wondering what other, if any, changes have been made aside from the red edge issue.

If you wait a few days, I'm sure you will find out :)

The beta testers will have been the subject of an NDA and shouldn't therefore discuss the firmware outside of the group.

Happy to wait, in fact for the lenses that I use my experience with red edge is nil. Overall, I have no complaints regarding software issues so I am curious as to what other enhancements/fixes will be included. But as you write, will find out soon enough.

I love that we have more visibility into what the firmware is targeting to fix, as well as release ETA. This goes a long way for customers. Good job Leica and LUF!

I definitely concur- nice to be kept informed. Thanks all who were involved. I patiently wait for its release.

Now if Leica could just be as forthcoming with lens deliveries- once again, I patiently wait ;)

I think Leica have done well in enlisting the help of people here to test the firmware. In doing so, they achieve much greater coverage than they could ever hope to achieve by themselves and create significant customer loyalty to the marque at the same time, a feeling of inclusiveness.

This doesn't mean of course that every armchair developer's laundry list is up for inclusion in future developments, not even my long argued for viewfinder/rangefinder makeover, but it does hint at a continuing dialogue between trusted users (I blotted my copybook long ago) and Leica.

I'll look forward to seeing what their efforts have brought us.

I can't remember how to load the new software but prevent the picture number from re-setting to 0.

Use two SD cards. Make sure on one of them has at least one image file on it as taken by the camera. Use the other to load the firmware into the camera. When the firmware has finished loading then you will get prompted to re-start the camera. Switch it off, swap the SD cards, and switch it on again. Voilà—camera will continue counting.

When you only have one SD card then save the card's contents (including folder structure and at least one image file, but excluding the firmware .UPD file) before using the card for the firmware update process. Restore the card's contents before switching the camera on after the update. The frame counter will pick up the frame number of the last image file found on the card and then count from there.
