Hi all LUF friends,

To protect the screen of your M8 against the accidental streaks or scratch, put you a film over?

In my opinion this film must allow besides a good visibility of pictures(good return of colours or of black and white) and should

not "come out" or "come off":)

....and to clean your optics, with what you clean them, if they are dirty, rag in fibres?

same remark : also no scratch on lens !

Thanks for your information

Regards

Henry

RAG:

Whatever is clean, cotton or Microfiber, and handy. That could mean my tee or polo shirt.

LCD Protector:

Yes on one and non on the other. I could care less what the image looks like on the cameras LCD. I only use it for framing check, content and general exposure.

Depends where you are Henry. At home you can use anything. If you are in the middle of Laos or over Vietnam you should probably clip a Spudz to your neckstrap, and the smart money throws away lens caps and uses lens covers. You can wash your spudz, and use them on wet, and when wet.

I use a real shammy leather to do two things. First I wrap up the camera with it when in the bag. Very good for protection and soaking up bumps. Second use to get back on thread is that a shammy is brilliant for cleaning body, glass surfaces and front filter. I do not know but it just works flawlesslym

Best wishes to all.

Henry, I have a film over my screen, the same since I bought the camera one year and a half ago. I can't even notice it and it is very resistant and transparent. I bought 5 on eBay and the other 4 are still taking the dust in the closet. It seems indestructible, even by the big point of my nose...

To clean the lenses I use a soft rag that Leica gently provided me. It is always in my pocket and do nor releases fibers.

The professional camera shop where I bought my M8 advised me to get a chamois leather at the local supermarket (real leather not a synthetic version), they do not even stock microfibre cloths etc. which they feel is a waste of money. The chamois leather is used for special cleaning occasions, for everyday use I use a household grade microfibre cloth (from the same supermarket). Total cost about 10 euro or so.

Hi all Luf friends,

Thanks to you gentlemen to have answered my questions.

As apparatus are new and that I am careful, I would not like to scratch the screen when I photograph as Enrico .

My agent Leica recommended me to use the film " digiCover " a German product, this film is discreet and it is not seen.

On top of that, he allows a good visibility of pictures (see photos)

For the lens i use a rag "digiClean" of the same producer.

This product is WITHOUT alcohol

He comes in 2 sachets (one with a wet rag-n°1 and one with a dry rag-n°2)

Thank you again for all your answers.

Regards

Henry

I actually think that is a bad idea. Leather is not soft and can carry dirt with it.

I certainly wouldn't try to clean anything with any type of leather product.

Just how do you clean the piece of leather?

Just last night a washed all my microfiber cloths and hung them up to dry. By the the end of the night, just before bedtime, they were clean and dry, ready for use once more.

Another potential problem with leather is that it's an organic material and it will encourage fungus growth after a while in warm, humid conditions. Personally I wouldn't want fungus anywhere near my lenses in case the spores find their way inside ...

From wikipeidia: Tests have shown that genuine chamois leather is the least abrasive drying material for any auto surface (particularly the various lacquers).

It is woth noting that paint/laquer is a lot softer than coating on a lens. Microfibre cloth (PET) is more abrasive than chamois.

Specifically for lens cleaning Chamois Leather Manufacturer and SAMSUNG SC-D77 Chamois Leather Cleaning Cloth just random examples.

I don't think, Pete, that the fungus found on leather is the same species as the one that damages lenses. If it were that generic you could not eat Stilton with your camera in the room ;)

I use this:

ZAGG | invisibleSHIELD | Leica M8 Cases, Screen Protectors, Covers, Shields, Skins, Invisible Shield

Works well and they'll replace it if needed.

Hope this helps.

After nearly three years without LCD protector there are considerably more scratches on the chrome of my camera than on the LCD. The other one - well, it has the sapphire LCD cover, which I understand will survive a nuclear explosion.

:D I'm sure your right, Jaap. I just think of one of my favourite leather jackets that emerged from a cupboard once wearing its own coat of mildew yet all the other clothes were fine. :(

Btw, I never acquired a taste for Stilton (ugh) although my father and aunt certainly did. They had a Christmas ritual where they would buy each other a large Stilton in a china pot and at Christmas dinner they would open the Stiltons up, 'feed' them with a bottle of port, close them back up again and put them away. Then they would take out the Stiltons from an earlier Christmas and open them up, which would have a couple of inches of mould growth. They would scrape off the mould and eat it without disturbing the Stilton and then feed the Stilton with port and then 'put it back down' for a future year. It was the highlight of their Christmas - if not their year - and they swore that it was delicious. I was eventually persuaded to try some once but it just tasted like dead things to me. Yech.

I have been using Invisible Shield protectors since shortly after The Dawn of Time but I've stopped using them on camera LCDs. They tend to have an annoying orange-peel effect and actually do wear some. My two current products I'm evaluating (through installation and use) are the acrylic Acmaxx and the glass GGS (not confused with Giotto). The acrylic probably gives more impact protection whereas the glass is very, very transparent. Something to think about...

2 free Dura-Sec Hi-Tec self healing M8 protectors to anyone who wants them. I don't need them now with sapphire glass LCD. Worked just fine on old LCD. PM me if wanted
