hunterconsult Posted June 2, 2009 Share #1 Posted June 2, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I am about to purchase an m8.2 my first digital m with a new 28mm elmarit and I understand that I will have to send off to leica for my free filters. Can I shoot comfortably without an IR/UV filter in the meantime or is the camera effectively useless without such a filter attached.
Advertisement Posted June 2, 2009 Posted June 2, 2009 Hi hunterconsult, Take a look here m8.2 shooting without uv/ir filters. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Marty Posted June 2, 2009 Share #2 Posted June 2, 2009 Without the filters it's a bit of hit and miss. It really depends on what you shoot. So it is definitely not useless. And, if you shoot B/W you may not miss the filters at all.
jaapv Posted June 2, 2009 Share #3 Posted June 2, 2009 Most welcome to the forum Not all shots will be off, in fact the majority will be ok to fine. Avoid strong sunlit conditions and flash. If you do get a shot you cannot correct properly you can always convert it to black and white. Just have fun and use it; it takes time to familiarize yourself with a new camera anyway. paisatge Posted June 2, 2009 Share #4 Posted June 2, 2009 hmm...doesn't that only matter when shooting black fabrics?
jaapv Posted June 2, 2009 Share #5 Posted June 2, 2009 (edited) No- that is a myth. It may be most noticeable to the casual viewer, but in fact it is the least of the problems. The whole colour spectrum is off, specifically everything containing chlorophyl (foliage) or heamoglobin (Caucasian skin) and anything having anomalous IR reflective properties. The upside is that colour balance in general photography is not an absolute value, esthetically speaking, but the photographer's interpretation, so the shifted colours may not matter. JLV Posted June 2, 2009 Share #6 Posted June 2, 2009 Hi all, Please forgive this intrusion wich doesn't answer directly to the question but is related to in anycase. I am surprised that if you purchase a M8.2 and a new 28, your dealer will not supply a Leica filter for the time you receive the free ones from Solms. I bought a used mint M8 (non declared to Solms so I could apply for the free filters) and different lenses months ago in France and the shop supplied the filters till I get the free ones that I will give "back" to them. It seems to me that it is a simple and natural business behaviour from a Leica dealer. All the best, Jean-Luc
jaapv Posted June 2, 2009 Share #7 Posted June 2, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) That is true, Jean-Luc. Alternately, having splashed out on gear like this it is no great sacrifice to get a B&W filter and sell it on the forum when the Leica ones arrive, which, I understand, may take some time. Iansky Posted June 2, 2009 Share #8 Posted June 2, 2009 I have had my M8.2 for 1 month now and have been waiting for my filters (have heard they can take a couple of months depending on size). I am just using normal UV filters and lenses are NOT 6 bit coded - the results I have been getting have been great and you can view my M8 images here: www.Ianskyphotosite.blogspot.com
jaapv Posted June 2, 2009 Share #9 Posted June 2, 2009 The results are fine, but you'll be even more happy when you get your filters. The grass will grow greener and the people around you will start wearing black again. Still, nice work.
dwind Posted June 2, 2009 Share #10 Posted June 2, 2009 The dealers can't get ir filters either. Mine has them on back order. I lucked into finding 2 used ones. As or coding, I got Tims coder, coded 3 lenses in about 90 seconds and all set to go.

I always supply IR filters to my M8/M8.2 customers while they wait for the free ones from Leica. Why all dealers don't do this is beyond me. karl101 Posted June 2, 2009 Share #12 Posted June 2, 2009 When I first got my camera, and was waiting for the free IR filter, the only time I really noticed was when I took a picture of my sock. It came out purple instead of blue. I think that's because its made from man-made fibre rather than wool or cotton. Karl.
paisatge Posted June 2, 2009 Share #13 Posted June 2, 2009 guess I can forget about getting a LTM CV Heliar 15mm
jaapv Posted June 2, 2009 Share #14 Posted June 2, 2009 Why? There is a John Milich mount, and a number of tricks to fit the filter.
paisatge Posted June 2, 2009 Share #15 Posted June 2, 2009 Why? There is a John Milich mount, and a number of tricks to fit the filter. With all the "trouble", probably better off getting the new M mount Heliar, isn't it? By the way, any pointers about mounting filters on the LTM 15mm Heliar? This kind of commercial gesture should be significative of the quality of service given to customers and should make the difference. I have a friend who bought a new sport car (emergency number in the states) and when he received the keys , they were on a simple metal ring. He said where is the leather one with the logo of the brand. The dealer answered,: you can purchase it at the accessory shop, we are two different entities: it will cost you (I don't remember) exactly but around a 100 euros) All the best, Jean-Luc

By the way, any pointers about mounting filters on the LTM 15mm Heliar? Yes. A 39 mm filter, mounted front to back (otherwise you'll touch the front element with the filter glass) and fixed with rubber strips, sticky stuff, whatever. I ground down a 40 mm filter for a tight fit and used contact glue to fix it.

jaapv Posted June 2, 2009 Share #19 Posted June 2, 2009 Well, given the fact that you can buy about five CV lenses against one Leica lens, the sacrifice is limited.
paisatge Posted June 2, 2009 Share #20 Posted June 2, 2009 That's certainly true. I was looking more between the LTM and M CV 15mm Heliar
