Default Sandisk Extreme IV cards

Hi, in a store a found the new sandisk extrem IV cards. Also availbale in SD now with a troughput of 40Mb/sec. Can anyone tell if the sandisk extreme IV!! cards are compatible with the leica M8, or if this card is sdhc compatible? I cannot find any details on the sandisk website. Other question is if there is a benifit in performance from 30Mb/s to 40Mb/s, i guess that the buffer time in the leica is enough to do continuous shooting in DNG on the extreme III cards?

I don't know if they're compatible but they're certainly WAY overkill - except when copying files to/from your computer using a Firewire reader.

smullink--
Welcome to the Forum!

SanDisk's cards labeled SD are SD compatible, and their cards labeled SDHC are SDHC compatible.

I don't think the M8's buffer has the throughput to do continuous shooting no matter how fast the card.

I think it was Bill Parsons who did some speed comparison tests on a couple different brands and speeds of cards, but there isn't a full comparison chart on using various cards with the M8. That's something maybe the forum should look into. (You can probably find Bill's reports with the Forum's search function.)

The only comment on speed I can make is that cards and cameras are both getting bigger and faster. That is, even though an M8 can't utilize the speed of the newest cards, the M9 or M10 will be able to do so. So I try to buy something faster than my current equipment needs, so that I won't be too far behind the curve next time. OTOH, the fastest available cards are often priced at a premium over the medium-speed ones, so I don't usually buy the newest and biggest and fastest.

The nice thing about the newest, latest, fastest, sharpest, most pixels ever, etc., is how cheaply I can get last year's best, fastest, etc. I was thinking that a Canon 5D that was terrific last year, and now is lousy, still takes great pictures, and is a bargain new at less than 1700- new or even around 1300- used. My M8 still has great looking files [regardless of the card I use] and these will look as good, next year, as well. My 20MB/sec SD cards still work as well as last year, and I still rarely run up against the buffer.

Cheers, and welcome to the forum.

Thanks for the reply's. I will stay on the extreme III cards. Based on price and performance i thing they are good enough. The reason to buy the fastest now for future use is nice but i thing by the time leica comes with a new camera there are already newer cards at a better price level.

Smullink, maybe you can try the new Sandisk Ultra II Plus Usb card that you can fold in two when out of the camera and plug directly into your computer without any card reader. They are fast in the camera and fast as well when downloading pictures to the computer. You can find them in 2, 4 and 8Gb. It changed my life.

I'm not aware of SanDisk making any SDHC memory cards in the Extreme IV line--only CompactFlash. There is nothing on their website, no press releases on this specific to SDHC or SD, nor any listings through Google.

Also there is no such thing as a 4GB SD memory card. At one time Transcend and a few other companies offered 4GB "SD Compatible" memory cards that did not conform to SDA any standards and are no longer available.

What store did you see the SanDisk Extreme IV SD or SDHC memory cards in? What capacity were they? I'm sorry, but this seems highly suspect.

I would summarize the reports so far by saying that the M8 will write as fast as a 60x card and no faster.

So, Ultra II and faster will give the same results.

Personally, I am using Transcend 8gb SDHC Class 6 cards -- available for less than $15 from Amazon -- and have experienced only blissful peace with 3 of these so far.

They are no faster than my 1 and 2gb cards from:
Sandisk Ultra II,
Ridata 133x

I don't see any sense in spending more than $15 for an 8GB card and the one's I've got work like a charm.

Regarding the previous post, I have 2 4gb Transcend SD cards, the out-of-spec ones, and they work fine, but s-l-o-w-l-y. They take at least 2x as long to write to as the above mentioned 3 cards.

BTW -- Happy New Year.

v.b.,
Geoff,

A misunderstanding -- I interpreted what you were saying as there were no 4GB SD cards of any sort.

Yes, correct, if we’re on the same page. There never was such a thing as a 4GB SD memory card, only 4GB SDHC memory cards and non-standard 4GB “SD Compatible” memory cards. There is a significant and important difference between each of these.
