Default off camera flash a la Pellegrin

Hi guys , actually 0,001% of my pictures are made using flash...so i'm really not into flash...
but here's my question:

i'm looking for an off camera flash connected with sync cable for my m6 and m8....
to use as a spot flash a la Paolo Pellegrin .
i like the style of selective lighting... and would like to use it both on my digital and film leicas.

it has to be relatively small..to hold it easily...and possibly has to use the same connection for both cameras...

yes i know m8 doesn't have the sync cable input..but there's any device who allows it?

maybe a canon EX580 MkII would be a very versatile flash to use also on a future DSLR... but how to connect it on camera hot shoes and also with cable to hold it in my hands?

please clear me up about this matter i'm lost in artificial lights, wires, connectors and sync rubbish!!

Nikon 'system cables' SC-17 and (the current) SC-19 work just fine. They are spiralised and about one meter when extended.

Subscribe to Reid Reviews (http://reidreviews.com/reidreviews/) and read his article 'Working With Flash'. It alone is worth the subscription fee.

Übrigens bin ich der Meinung dass die M9 muss wettersicher sein

How about a handheld flashlight/torch?

I was looking at something like a torch. Is there something portable and sutable. I know it is not a flash but results can be more predictable in manual mode. Anyone using one?

the pentax off camera cord for their units has the advantage of having a repeater on the top of the camera side you can mount a viewfinder if need be.

A bit shorter than the nikon cord but workable. Also works with TTL on the M8.

Visit Strobist by Dave Hobby. It's all about off camera flash. I bet that after reading the site, the percent of shots with flash increases dramatically.

M8 does not have synch ports, but I have tried using various radio triggers i.e. Pocket Wizard and Skyports, they all work with the M8.

Good Luck!

There is all sorts of explanation on how to use off-camera flash in the Lighting 101 articles. The site has evolved to refinements in techniques to maximize off camera flash use. But to keep it simple,

On the M8 or M6 you can use a radio trigger and at the flash a radio receiver. You won't get ittl in this setup because you are not using a canon body.

Many options for the radio setup,

1. Pocket wizards as transeiver, get 2 units - one acting as the transmitter attached to you hotshoe on camera and the other acting as the receiver connected via a flash to mini plugs like this (FlashZebra.com: Female Hotshoe to Pocket Wizard, CyberSync or Elinchrom Skyport (Item #0038)) as the EX580 does not have pc connectors.

2. Skyports comes as a set of transmitters and receivers and you will need the similar adapter.

3. Gadget Infinity Radio Triggers as a set, but allows for your flash to be mounted on the receiver without the adapter. (Look up in ebay)

The above is probably in order of reliability, range and price with the Pocket Wizards being the most expensive, most reliable and greatest range.

Good Luck!

Aulia

PS I have tested these on the M8, no experience on the M6, but I see no reason why it would not work on the M6
