Few weeks ago I have ordered 2x HK Battery which many people said good and bad.
I asked my friend to modify my old trusty charger Powerex MH-C777Plus-II charger which I used to charge a lot of nicad battery and lihium eg. Nikon D1H battery, Sony camcorder, Phaseone battery etc. to connect M8 battery. Please find the attached picture. The reason I modify the connector of this charger because it is able to discharge and recharge automatic by self adjust voltage and show the capacity by digit. I have 2 Leica original batteries and 2 HK batteries. After run the test twice in each battery. I can conclude that. 1. Each battery has slightly capacity. 2. Leica battery both has over 1900 mAh. 1st ~2500, 2nd ~ 2300 3. HK battery 1st ~ 1700, 2nd ~ 2000 I don't know about the battery life. Time will tell. It seems Leica has better capacity than HK slightly but big price different. kitty |

I think you will also notice that the aftermarket batteries do NOT register on the M8 meter like the real Leica batteries.
With aftermarket batteries you need to fully discharge them and then recharge for the M8 meter to show 3 bars. Otherwise the M8 will only show 2 or even only 1 bar even though the battery is fully charged. This could be due to the lower capacity of the aftermarket batteries. As for the overall running time of the camera I find both makes of batteries give the same usage. Having said all that I don't use my aftermarket batteries anymore. I do have them fully charged and in the bag for the Just In Case scenario. |

Even if the mA capacity should be slightly different, usually the durability difference should be exponential when related to the same power use (not constant by the way).
i.e. the durability of a 2000mA vs 2500mA battery is not just 20% less, it should be something getting more and more evident as the use goes on. I guess Mark (Norton) should be able to calculate it exactly. Anyway, I just bought once an HK battery (3 times cheeper than Leica's), but that never made my day, so I bought 2 other original ones, and I'm quite happy with them. |
