I just had a newsletter from Meister Camera in Hamurg and Berlin that as of immediately Leica knocks off 800 Euros on the M8 if any camera is given as a trade in. This is just a regular discount of course, and it will be interesting to see if this will boost the slow sales.

I'm not surprised... With September 2007 price increase in Europe Leica was commiting "hara-kiri" 腹切り (for not offending our Japanese friends, "seppuku" 切腹 is the formal term).

This 800 € off (before taxes or after taxes?) brings the price of the M8 a bit cheaper than the original price. I suppose this offer will be only available in Europe because of the Euro strenght. This will bring actual international prices and EU prices to the same level.

Good move.

800 is after tax, so in effect the discount is somewhat less. The price in Europe is still a lot higher than elsewhere.

There must be a reason why sales must be boosted right now, just a few months before Photokina. The CD (Compact Digital)???

I'd be more inclined to blame the usual Summertime slowdown. half the Western hemisphere is about to go on holiday/stop spending. This is just an incentive to shift stock.

Is it really "any camera"? Cos I have a dud Fuji p&s in a drawer...

You bet... it's a discount, plainly said... the "trade-in" is a typical mktg trick to not speak of "price reduction"... none expects to bring in a VALUE on the camera you trade.
