Wonderful dreamy atmosphere. The picture in the middle is superb and definitely my favorite! If critic is needed: The kids look at bit blurred...

Thank you Perspectives

The first is my favourite, but the second is my second favourite. The kids are a bit blurred. this is the combination of
(i) a low depth of field (f/4),
(ii) not the highest iso in the world (I don't like shooting on the M8 above 320 even in IR),
(iii) focus near to infinity - due to point (i)
(iv) and I think most important of all because I shot at one sixth of a second and kids move

Yes, it looks like motion blurr because everything else is really sharp. Regarding ISO I lately changed my mind a bit towards using higher ISOs as well. Firstly I read a comment saying "I like to ramp up to 320 because it adds a film-ish look" and my observation confirms that is true. And secondly I took many ISO 2500 pictures at an event lately and in some pictures I was really surprised about the quality. For sure good enough for small prints! Anyway, your second picture is still my first favorite because its much easier for my eyes to move around. In your first pictures the lawn is like a vacuum or nirvana and I nervously move around to find anything to hold on to

Nick,

Please explain how you used the M8 to capture these IR images. What filter did you use (if any)?

Thanks!

I will give higher iso's another experiment one of these days. Although I don't actually mind motion blur in IR stuff, think it adds to the dreamy quality. I would just like more depth of field in some shots.

I used a B + W 093 IR filter. I have tried others before with the M8, but this one is the only one that really does it well I think. I only have it for my 18mm Zeiss which means I only really do IR with that lens.

I so also have an R72 filter which is described as IR and I can use it on my favourite lens my 35mm Nockton f1.2). I don't find it is as good at IR but some results I have had have been OK, like this one:

Anyway, I'm off to Cuba tomorrow am so getting ready now. So that I can have one small satchel bag I can only take 2 cameras and 4 reasonable sized lenses. I have gone for the M8 (of course) and my Konica Hexar RF (as it has AE for street stuff) and the following 4 lenses from my arsenal

21 Elmarit (for when I want wide)
28 Elamrit - for my normal walkabout stuff as its like a 35 on my M8
35mm Nockton 1.2 - for a bit of anything on either camera and when it's dark
50mm Summo - standard on my film RF

Thus no special infrared in Cuba as the 18 must stay behind, but I guess I could always take the R72 filter for the 35 in case I get tempted

My ideal would be to get another B + W 093 filter for my 21 Elmarit - I think that would be the best lens for IR.... it's wide enough, great quality and faster than my Zeiss. But can't get that before going to Cuba tomorrow so i guess that will have to wait for another day

Nick, Great pictures!

Just a small question, can anyone confirm that a 28/2 ASPH is a good lens to use with IR (093 filter)?

And another one: where can I buy such a filter, online preferably NL or EU zone or does it make sense to buy outside Europe?

I can't see why a 28 Summicron wouldn't be suitable. Just remember you need to adjust the focusing point. With the Voigtlander lens I've used I align the focussing point with the f4 marking on the lens.

My 093 was ordered from Ffordes in the UK - ffordes photographic : Main Index

I bought the Heliopan 780 filter at Nivo Schweitzer in Amsterdam. They have to order it for you. Great results compared to the B+W 092 filter

Nick,

Did you have any problems with a hotspot using the Zeiss 18 and IR pass filter? This lens was reported to exhibit a hotpsot using an IR filter (see link), but I see no evidence of this issue in your images posted here.

Stunning! How are you handling these in post? LR? Any Photoshop?

Thx for sharing...

Hello Steve,

Post handling was don in Capture One v 4.0. I used the JFI CO_Red_BW_Filter_1 ICC profile for the conversion to Black and White. In the exposure menu the saturation was increased to 75. At the levels the 0 was changed to the beginning of the histogram and the curve is steepened (S model). No further changes in Photoshop.
Another photo I made with the 24 mm lens gives a bit a hotspot.

Best regards,

Co

Another beautiful shot and thanks for the PP info. Did you buy a filter for each lens or did you buy a large one and use step down adapters?

I have found a UK store that is willing to ship the Heliopan to the states. Apparently they are quite difficult to get here.

Nick,

I particularly like the 093 and Nokton 35/1.2 combination for IR, as shown below:

Steve,

I have a E55 filter which fits to the Elmarit 24 mm and the Summicron 90 mm. With a stepping ring I can also use it on my Summilux 35 mm.
You have to compare the curves but I think the B+W 093 is about the same as the Heliopan 780.

Greetings,

Co

Cool. That's what I was going to do as well and just wanted to confirm that it works. However, I'm going to get the 60mm to fit my Noctilux and step down to my other lenses from there.

BTW, I have the B+W 093 and haven't gotten results anywhere near what I'm seeing you post here, especially the wooden shed one. Love that and wouldn't mind seeing that huge hanging on a wall

Thank you Steve,

I have no expirience with the B+W 093, only the 092 which gives less stunning results.
The example herewith is from the 092 and changed to duotone in Photoshop.

Monday I will go to the UK (Newcastle-Glasgow-Edinburgh and surroundings) and hope to make other nice shots.

Best Regards,

Co

Well - thanks for the thread - it's whet my appetite... I've now ordered a Heliopan IR filter as specified here from Retro Photographic Ltd - Black & White Specialist Photographic Products. Reasonable price (GBP 29) and I look forward to playing on a couple of forthcoming trips...

BTW - any one experience of post processing this kind of image in LR? I've pretty well defaulted to this - never got on with P1...
