Default Which version of 75mm summilux to buy

Hi,

I am planning to purchase a used 75mm summilux for my m8, but don't know if there is any difference between the second version 75mm summilux made in Canada with E60 and the last Germany made version, in terms of image quality. Need a feedback so I can make a decision soon for my purchase.

Thanks,

MZ

They are all the same, optically.

First version has detachable hood, the second one's is telescopic.

Carl, are you sure of that? Mine is Canadian and has telescoping hood.

Optically all 75 Summiluxes are the same. German version reduced the weight of the Canadian version a bit. For me, that and cost would be the only comparison factors. The 75/1.4 is a heavy little monster whose weight becomes more a matter of interest the longer you carry it.

Howard,
Yes I'm sure. I had an image linked to my first post, but it went AWOL.

From its introduction in 1980 to 82/83 it was numbered 11814 and looked like this :

75-luxv1.jpg
(This is a screen grab from an M4-P brochure.)

The hood is similar in design to that seen on the tabbed 50 cron and 50 lux v2, but it is huge.

Thanks people. I think depends on my luck. I will get either the 2nd version with built-in hood E60 or 3rd version, the lighter German version. Currently, I am patiently waiting for the right one to come along.

I shoot mostly with 21 f2.8 distagon, 35mm summilux and 90mm APO, But I am always missing the 75mm range composition, it comes up more often than I expected. I think once I get 75mm, I will use it more than the 90mm APO.

One must wonder what Leica did to make it lighter. Given their history with the M4 and M6, they had to have cheapened the mount, glass being the same..

The version with the detachable hood is somewhat rare and there may be a price premium due to collectors interest. Go for the version with the built in hood. The Summilux 75mm is a Mandler desgined lens, and Tom Abrahamsson reported a conversation with Mandler where he said that this was one of the designs he was most happy with.

Is it true that, by the point of view of design/glass, it's in practice identical to the 80 f1,4 for R bodies ? I seem to have red something like, but am not sure...

I am afraid not. This was an article in the Viewfinder (the best Leica periodical available) published by LHSA (Leica Historical Society of America) but this is not available online for non-members.

Do you remember year, volumen or issue number?

LHSA (Leica Historical Society of America) makes a DVD of Viewfinder archives (all issues from 1968-2004)... so the article must be included in that DVD.

Correct. It is probably in one of the later issues, but I will have a look. I may be able to get a pdf copy.

There were 3 versions of the 75/1.4 AFAIK:
- # 11814 (1980-1982) with removable hood # 12539 and E58 filter, made in Canada
- # 11815 (1982-1998) with built-in hood and E60 filter, made in Canada
- # 11810 (1998-2006) with built-in hood and E60 filter, made in Germany
FWIW

Carl, lct--
Thanks for the correction!

I was aware of the Canadian and German versions with attached hood, but had never seen or heard of the original.
