Default Gitzo GT1550T on M8

Has anyone good things to say (or reservations to note) about this combination? And can the supplied head be easily upgraded if preferred? Thanks in anticipation....

Well, here’s an excellent discussion on tripods although keep in mind that a lot of responses and recommendations will be based on multiple use. So, if you have a DSLR and the M8, the larger ones provide more options. If you want portability and great support, the GT1550T is more than enough. In fact, when I get around to replacing my flimsy Silk, this is the same one I would consider.
Oh yeah... IMHO of course ~

I recently bought a 1550T to use when I was going on a short trips and only wanted an airlane carry on bag. It is incredibly light and compact and in practice isn't as short as I had feared. I am currently using the Gitzo head that came with it and an Arca Swiss quick release plate because I am invested in RRS stuff for my other tripod and cameras. The M8 is perfectly fine on this tripod. More stability can be gained from hanging your bag on the hook. When out and about I simply hang the tripod on my bag strap ((under one leg - hard to describe but the strap is just over the leg). If you have other cameras, I had a Nikon D300 on the tripod with heavy lens. new to look it down tightly and take care but it worked and was still more convenient than taking my 2541L on that trip. Fianly we tested an MF camera on it. In a pinch it can work and we got sharp results but we used a stronger head (RRS).

I use the GT1550T with included ball head on the M8 with no problem. I've shot up to a 16 second exposure and it was rock-solid (with self-timer/cable release, of course). Perfect height for shooting and fits in the back compartment of my under-airline seat laptop bag. Truly a tripod for travelling and just the right size for the M8.

I have the G1155T - it's great, the supplied head is fine for the M8 - but maybe if you use it a lot you might want a quick-release head instead. Fits in a hadley pro, or any other A4 length bag.

David.

I have this combination and have used it often for travel. I find it very solid for long exposures with the M8--I have taken 30 second exposures in dusk with sharp and beautiful results. I find the supplied head to be fine without quick release. I simply loosen the ball lock and can thread the head plate to the camera in seconds. I think a quick release would add fuss and weight that is not needed.
