Default 24mm

I am looking to bridge cv 15 and 35 cron with either 21 or 24mm. If i can avoid additional viewfinders, i will, hence 24mm. That said, how obtrusive is the 55mm filter size? does the whole lower right corner effectively disappear from view?

Hi Misha, it covers quite a bit of the viewfinder - I don't have the camera/lens to hand so I can't estimate how much - however the lens itself is outstanding.

I use mine with a 35mm ASPH Summicron and I've found it a great combination.

It obscures a fair bit, less if you leave off the lens shade. Actually I may start leaving the lens shade off mine - it's a 21mm shade even on a full frame camera so it's probably close to useless on the M8 with an IR filter on the front.

Misha, the 24 is a magical lens!

I don't use the Leica hood on either my 24 or 35 'lux-a. I purchased the inexpensive, steel hoods from eBay (Hong Kong?). These things cost less than $10 and are less instrusive in the viewfinder.

I don't use a lens cap anymore. The combo of steel hood and filter are enuf for me.

Regards,

Misha - It isn't, but the lens hood is. Take note of Bill's post - good advice to get an alternative lens hood and give you the option of using ether depending on shooting circumstances.

I do entirely suscribe to this. The 24mm is now my only lense I am using on the M8. From landscapes to short range pictures.

I just recently landed a silver 24-Elmarit and I love the darn thing! In fact, it was Bill’s photos that pushed me over the edge. Back on point, I don’t find the lens or associated hood a problem. I suppose my background as a tank operator in the Army forced me to cancel out certain optic obstructions. Still, I would love to find one these round metal lens hood to try out.

BTW: Is is me or is the LUF site slow today?

It's slow today

There has been a fire in a server farm in Texas that is affecting websites around the world (mine included...). I suspect that this may be the cause of the problem - 9,000 servers are down.

Regards,
Daniel, I just did a search on eBay for "leica lens hood metal" and retrieved a number of auction that include those from

Heavy2stars Photo Gear

where I bought my hoods.

As mentioned, these things are inexpensive.

Sorry to spend Daniel's money, tho it is fun.

Misha, my decision to buy the 24 was made ENTIRELY based upon reading ReidReviews. This is the best $39 you will ever spend on photography.

Go here for info:

Welcome to ReidReviews

Sean Reid has reviewed EVERY lens for the M8 except for some that are newly available. What makes the site so valuable are (1) detailed info about the lens -- in comparison with all the alternatives, and (2) real pictures taken with each lens.

In particular, you will find 2 reviews dedicated to the 21-28 mm area that are indispensable to someone getting ready to buy a 21 or 24.

When I had made my decision, I was delighted to find that Edwin Puts says of the 24mm that it is the "single lens every M owner must have."

I usually use the original hood that came with my 24ASPH, I just put a 55mm wide angle hood (from Heavy2Stars on eBay) on it for the purpose of this shot (I've been using the hood on my Tri-Elmar).

m8-24asph-heavyst.jpg

The hood takes a 58mm snap-on cap from the same selle as a hood cap. Works great.

Here is an attempt to illustrate what the Heavy2stars hood (top) and the original Leica hood (bottom) blocks through the finder. These are not 100% accurate, but give you an idea. The hoods seem less dominant in the VF than the impression they make in these shots. (I got them using my cell phone's camera.)

thanks.
for a while 35mm was pretty much the universal bodycap but now i feel like (at least in terms of composition) that i had outgrown it (a bit) and would do very well with something wider. 24mm makes perfect sense on m8, except for may be its new price $3300 plus filter
the rational me will probably wait and see what photokina brings and such..

ahhhh the leica 24mm

possibly my favourite lens (at the moment)

I also find its far easier/better to use it with an external viewfinder
in fact the 28mm lines on the universal wide angle finder work a treat

yes the 24...at times my favorite...bought it cause of sean's review and bill's recommendation...loved it ever since...it's demanding though becuse of the huge compositional canvas so if forces you to think about how much is included in the frame but the images are amazing....well worth it

Yep, me too! As a daily lens, it's not my favorite although it is as wide as I want to go on the M8.

I loved the zeiss 25 sold it because I found a mate but the zeiss 25 obscures less of the viewfinder better ergonomics smaller filter size and a whole lot cheaper .Also very sharp

When I made the decision to buy the M8, the first lens purchase I made was the 24 knowing it would be my widest. Never thought twice about it. I will look at he metal hood Bill suggest. It would save me some space in my bag........
