Maybe I'm too easily swayed by rumors, but I'm not investing in a Leica 24 for a while. I'm using a 25mm CV until I find out at Photokina time if it's really possible to make a 24mm Summilux that doesn't block much/most of the viewfinder.
Or has the 24mm f1.4 rumor been scratched, like the continuing upgrade one? Kirk |

It's the lens that almost always sits on my M8. As I do a lot of street photography and shoot often from the hip, the problem of the hood does not pose itself. To be honest, it only seemed a problem for the first few days that I had it. Now I no longer think about it.
I just checked again, but the corner that is cut off does not seem to be an intrusion even if I pay attention to it (dont' forget that there is a cut out part that let's you see a bit through the hood). ---------------------------- Frans |

I also have one of the cheap metal hoods for my 24mm lens, which I use with my M8 and much prefer to the Leica one. However I haven't yet used the 24mm with the metal hood on my M6, can anyone tell me whether it works OK with film or does it block out the corners of the 35mm image?

Inexpensive. Highly recommended, not the least because of cost.

after much deliberation, i decided not to wait for photokina and got a used 24mm elmarit from popflash. 2500 coded and uv/ir filter. not bad given another price increase - its now 3800 in b&h and such.
thanks so much for your sincere opinions. |

i don't have direct/hands-on experience with the 24. but after over a year worth of use of the 25ZM (un-coded), i have no urge to move to the 24. (though admittedly, the 24/25 is not my most used FL.) from the sample images (... and not of the test/brick wall variety) i've observed with the 24 since (and as impressive as they were), i was having a hard time seeing what, if anything, i would be getting in a 24 that i didn't already have in the 25ZM. IOW, the 25ZM is just as impressive, to me and for my use. (though i appreciate others may see things differently.) i don't mind spending the extra coin to get good/best glass (... and i do dig Leica glass). but in this case i couldn't justify the significant price delta, even compared to a 2nd-hand 24asph, just to have the "Leica" glass (that, at least to me and in this case, didn't seem to offer optically anything over the 25ZM). (and i don't think my assessment of any of the above would change if the 24/25 were my most used FL.) and yes, to me, for an RF rig the step from 46 to 55 is significant. especially when there is no speed gain. (this is less of an issue on an SLR rig, for me.) ![]() ![]() and the 25ZM is quite good for IR work too. (don't know about the 24, in this regard.) ![]() |

Further reflection to previous post:
On the Leica 24/Zeiss 25 issue, be sure to check Reid Reviews. The Biogon is contrastier (ugh), but indeed lets you see more. I tried both & don't like the viewfinder blockage. And the external viewfinder that Sean recommended isn't available any more (new or, apparently, even used). There's a third solution, for those who want to see the whole viewfinder: Faster 21mm & 28mm with slow CV25 in between. It blocks nothing in the viewfinder, & you can use a Leica 12585 (35-50) hood on it without vignetting. F4 lens isn't going to please bokeh-lovers, but it's a great outdoor/street lens left permanently @ f6.3. Change to faster 21 or 28 in lower light. Price is unbelievably low for its image quality. If 24mm one of your primary focal lengths, go Leica; but if it's an occasional/intermediate focal length, consider this alternative? Kirk Last edited by thompsonkirk : 07/17/08 at 05:38 PM. |

Difficult to tell from the looks of it but it might work. The lens hood that ships with the 24mm is the same one used on the 21mm so it is wide. Impossible to say about this one but as the owner of a couple of B+W hoods I can tell you they're extremely well made.

I also have done the same as you.I managed to get a mint 24/.2.8 elmarit at a good price. If Leica introduce a 24 cron it will add £1000 minimum to the new price of the emarit and if its a 24 lux its likely to be as much again plus it may need a separate viewfinder. The 24 is such a good performer any new lens is unlikely to give better results bearing in mine any gain in speed.
