Default Travel to Turkey

I'm going to Turkey and wondering if their electrical outlets are the same as Europe and the Middle East. I'll be taking my M8. Any tips?

Thanks,
Wilfredo

Hello,

They are the same type (220V) as Europe and the Middle East. You and your M8 will be fine. Please also share your photos with us.

Have a good journey.

Indeed, I live in Istanbul since 2000 and can definitely confirm that. Where will you be, Wilfredo? If schedules will permit, we might have a coffee someplace

If places and schedules come into proper alignment maybe I can join in for the coffee, there are certainly enough coffee shops here in Istanbul to choose from.

When (if) staying in Istanbul, always start each day with a walk through the Grand Bazzar before heading off to your appointed destination for the day. A great experience, as is all of Turkey.

Don't get too excited if you see a bargain priced Rolex Actually I bought one and it kept perfect time.

Enjoy your trip, it's certainly a photogenic country. If you get the chance do try to visit Ephesus.

I second James' suggestion on Ephesus. I reckon it will have special meaning to you Wilfredo. Whatever, go early in the morning to beat the tourist buses, or late in the day when they have left. Also they are better times for photography of the ruins.

Turkey and, especially, Syria are great for Hellenistics ruins and city remains. There the columns still stand. In Greece the stories are, with a few exceptions like the Akropolis, often greater than the stones.

If you need someone local to select the coffee shop, let me know too. It seems that we may gather quite a large group.

Thank you all for the tips and good wishes. I am really looking forward to this trip. Among other places I will be visiting Ephesus and Cappadocia. It is a packed tour sponsored by the Pacifica Institute.

Vieri, Richard and Seyhun, it would be great to meet for some good Turkish coffee or a sampling of the local brew. It looks like the evenings of the 11th or 12th of June will work best. The afternoon of the 12th is especially good. Do these dates work?

Cheers,
Wilfredo

Wilfredo,

Istanbul is the city of of extremes: Modern and ancient, simple and luxury, beauty and blighted, east and west, tolerance and backwardness, calmness and hectic rush, etc.

It's a firework for your senses, and Istanbul has many faces to discover. Try to walk a little bit outside of classic touristic paths, and definitely accept the opportunity to meet one of your fellow forum members in Istanbul, because they'll certainly show you some insider places.

My recommendations:

The spice bazaar (walk deep inside)
Galata Bridge (walk over the bridge to the small fish market)
Make a trip with the liner along the Bosporus or the Golden Horn
Santral Istanbul (Old ottoman Istanbul powerhouse now became one of Europe's biggest art projects)
Ortakoy (Old fishermen village, now in he middle of the city, you'll see a mosque, with a synagogue and a church side by side)

Also don't miss at least one of these two restaurants: Tike and Beyti (You'll never forget)

Have fun !

I second all of erg's recommendations for Istanbul. In terms of weather, this is the best time for visiting Cappadocia. Enjoy your trip wilfredo.

As it happens, I will be in Istanbul on the 11th, as well - coffee or tea (maybe even that salty yak-milk stuff) would be great. :-) Anyway, I'm looking forward to it.

I spent Spring Break there in March & am returning for a couple of weeks, June 9-20. Most of this will be jumping all over from Ephesus & Konya & Cappadocia & Ankara to Haran, but will at least have a couple of days at each end of the trip in Istanbul. I took a CL w/the 40 & 90 and a C-Lux 1 before; this time, I think I'll just take a Digilux 2.

Turkey's a great place for lots of reasons, an very fotogenic, too.

Wilfredo -- when you say "Pacifca Institute," do you mean the Pacifica Graduate Institute in Santa Barbara (or Montecito or thereabouts)? I know some of the core facullty there, as it happens. How large is your Turkey group?

I'll be available in Istanbul on the 11th. and 12th. I can arrange a few members from our SLRdigital group (not only Leica's though) also to join us. I can make all the arrangements here as you prefer. Pls let me know.

Also, in case you need any assistance for/during your stay in Turkey, just give your coordinates, and I think I can be able to help.

Hope to see you all here as suggested.

Seyhun

Hi Vieri,
Small world!. I (God willing) will also be visiting Turkey (late August) - Istanbul and Erdine and would be grateful for any advice you could offer.

Arthur,

An advance note:

You have to visit the "Kofteci Osman" for your lunch. Then you may have some idea from my Edirne album where the location names are given, but the rest is in Turkish.
Gallery enter my name "Seyhun", and the first album is Edirne. Taken with M8. In Edirne, I advise a guided tour, because there are so many things involved in that small city, but which was once among the most important places in the Ottoman history.

Just got back from two weeks in Istanbul. I had a great time and shot a lot of, uh film. I got an M8 in the mail a few days before I left, so since I had already bought tri-x for the trip and hadn't added the M8 to my insurance yet, I left it home.

Don't have any pix yet since I have to process all that film, but we had a great time and it's a very interesting city, though not always easy to photograph. Or, more precisely, it's not always easy to get past the obvious and the cliche.

My best advice would be to get out of sultanahmet and the touristy areas. We spent a day walking along the old city walls in the western districts of the city, very interesting. Enjoy your trip!
