Default Something odd with my M8

I have a strange behavior with my M8.

It suddenly resetted the counter, so the images started at 1 again.

When I switch the camera on, is states I can still stores about 440 images on my 2G card, although I have DNG selected. But after the first shot it jumps directly to 130 left.

Anyone seen this behavior before?

Reinier

First format the card in a PC using FAT, NOT FAT 32, Then follow these instructions.

Here is a procedure that will allow you change to anything you want:

1. Set the Picture Number in the menu to "Standard".
2. Format the SD card in camera.
3. Reset the File Number in the menu. It actually says “Reset fold. No”, that is the one you want.
4. Set Picture Number back to "Continuous"
5. Take one image
6. Shut off camera, remove SD card and place in card reader attached to a computer.
7. Access the image in your Finder or Explorer (Mac or PC); rename the image number to whatever file number/image number you want. I would suggest Lyyyxxxx, with "y" being your preferred folder number (See Note Below) and "x" being the frame number you want to start with. (You are making these changes to the file name on the card in the card reader.)

NOTE

If you want to change the first or second digit of the L100 (Lyyy above) in the file name, like to L200 or 120 or 220, then you have to change the folder name also.
The directory/folder structure on the card when in a card reader is [Drive Letter]:\DCIM\100LEICA\. You need to change the 100LEICA to whatever you want the file number to start with. Like if you want it to be L200xxxx then you need to rename that folder to 200LEICA. If you want L120 then you need to change that folder name to 120LEICA. It would look like this [Drive Letter]:\DCIM\120 or 200LEICA.

8. Properly remove card from card reader and return to camera.
9. Turn the camera on and press "Play". The file will now display with newly renamed folder and file number. (Use "Info" to see this data.)
10. Expose another image to confirm and check file numbers.
11. Format SD card, and you are good to go from that point on.

The right procedure your did read in the previous message. What probably happened, and why your counter resetted, is that you put a new SD-card - out of the box - in the camera and started shooting without first formatting it.

Always first format a new card in your camera! And do reformat that card in your camera too!

Yes that worked, thanks. I asume that out of the box they will be formated FAT32?

I bought 5 more 2G cards for my backpack trip to greenland this summer. Is easer to carry than an Image tank and much cheaper at current prices (8euro!) as well

And I bought two more batteries. Sould take me trough the 3 weeks I guess. Just to be sure I will also carry a M3 and some film...

No not really. FAT32 will work BUT if you have trouble it is best to format FAT. New cards need to be FORMATTED IN THE CAMERA no matter what format they may be, FAT/FAT32.

You get about 2GB's of images per battery IF you don't leave the camera on all the time and you don't review images. Otherwise I would bring more batteries and a charger.

I could take a charger but I'm afraid there will be no power-outlet in my back-pack

It should give about 250-300 shots (preview off) per battery so about 900 shots. I think it will do and else I still have the M3.

Also I bought the upgraded non-original batteries (1800mAh instead of 1700) but that will probably just compensate for the low temperatures

You should use a Voltaic Backpack then.

You will only be sure keep your batteries charged when you keep them warm (=on your body) all the time!

I am not sure this book:

Fotoboek Poollicht - Jolanda Linschoten • De Zwerver

will provide you with necessary tips, but I could bring you in contact with the writer. If you aren't already

That photovoltaic pack looks great, I will carry it next to my 70+15ltr backpack I guess. But you do remind me that the Leica charger indeed has a 12v option. Just may there is something that will do.

I'm afraid there will not be much polar light to see in juli. I hope there is, I really would love to see it, but there is hardly and dark period then

I would like some phototips, certainly on expiriences with equipment. I'm not fearing it too much though, the temperature is not that extreme in Juli (0-20C).
