Hey Guys
I finally got my camera back from Solms Oh boy did I miss it. Anyway now I want to really customize it now that I have fixed problems and decided to just keep it (listen to what the heart says) now as all agree M8 is pretty slipery little thing especially in vertical position so now I am contemplating what is a better option, Pro for Grip no cumbersom in and out of the case for changing stuff keeps the camera stream lined (birthday suit mode) I can still use tripod without takeing it out of the case Con for Grip No extra protection I think it is expensive for what it is Pro for Luigi case It protects the body from scratch or impact It should give me a nicer grip as well Looks very classic in it Con for Luigi case Cumbersom to take it in and out to replace battery and SD card makes M8 a bit bulky feeling? No tripod mount What do you guys think? or what do you find much better solution for you?? |

You may want to look into the Thumbs-Up... It has helped me tremendously with the extra grip specially when shooting vertically. I am not one to endorse gizmos and other add-on crap, but I highly recommend this IMHO very useful accessory that was left out when the M8 was designed.
Cheers, |

Hello Cho,
I use the wonderful Thumbs-up CS (Cold-Shoe version). This little device is a rare thing - it's ingeniously simple and simply transforms the handling of the camera. The difference is quite extraordinary! It also looks good on the camera. Choose the CS version to retain the use of the accessory shoe. I have a full Luigi case too, specified to accommodate the Thumbs-Up. I love the Luigi case for its old-world craftsmanship, the quality of its leather and the way it complements the M8's classic look. It genuinely protects the camera from minor knocks and scrapes. The Luigi case does make the camera feel larger in the hand, but personally I like that. The one down-side is the slight irritation of having to remove the case to replace the battery or SD card ... but that's really the consequence of a design conceit on the part of Leica. Luigi is a phenomenon that's increasingly rare these days - he's a gentlemanly, personable purveyor of bespoke craftsmanship of the highest order. His leather goods are pleasing to own, to look at, to hold, to smell! Above all, Luigi's stuff has style. Oh, by the way, I specified my Luigi case to incorporate a tripod mounting. It works just fine, but further extends the process of removing the case. Last edited by Speenth : May 17th, 2008 at 07:56 AM. |

It's a personal thing - and I have neither - but I'd go for a grip rather than the case any time. The cases add bulk, look hideous IMHO and don't protect the delicate part which is the rangefinder.
The only reason I haven't bought the Leica grip is that I've been hoping for a Rapidgrip to come along. It doesn't look like that's going to happen, so perhaps I ought to buy the Leica version.

I like the Luigi grip. I also have the Leica grip, but that stays at home. Even with huge lenses, it works for me:

I think that case illustrates my reservations completely <grin>

I favour the grip, although I may give the thumbs up a try as well. I like to be able to reach into my camera bag and firmly get a hold on the grip to pull the camera out, to avoid dropping. I don't know if the thumbs up would provide the same assistance when removing the camera from a bag.
I don't have the Luigi case but I do have a Luigi strap and it is an excellent item. I did not go for the case because of the dumb bottom plate design of the camera. LouisB

Hello GRIP ALL THE WAY! If you are looking for the best grip on the market go to Accessories from PhotoEquip They make a product called the Pro Grip. It attaches to the camera base plate, and becomes one with the camera. It is easy to use and replace on the run. It has a socket at the bottom in the center and provides perfect balance for the camera. I have both the Leica grip and the pro grip and once I received the pro grip, the Leica grip went back into the box and will go up on e-bay shortly. The pro grip cost about $170/US, but you can check it on their web site (address above) Hope this helps. Best Gary www.girphotos/com |

The 'Thumbs Up' is a marvellous device, and all that has been said about it earlier is correct.
I have just bought the version with the cold shoe so my Frankenfinder can be mounted on it. That means I have a spare 'simple' model, (model 1, shorter version) for sale if you or anyone wants it. Feel free to contact me if you do. Or I may just keep it in case I do go and buy that black paint MP sometime... ![]() |

I think the Luigi (or any other case) is a matter of taste. Some people like them some don't. But what I really don't understand is the low level grumbling about the M8 bottom plate. Its just taken me 23 second to take the Luigi case off my M8, take off the bottom plate, take out the SD card, put in a new SD card, put on the bottom plate and put on the Luigi case. What's the problem with that? Since my 2 G SD card gives me 187 raw files before I have to change it its not a major part of my threescore years and ten lost is it?

it's certainly a matter of taste. i've had both, and prefer the luigi half case with grip. the camera feels better in my hand in either vertical or horizontal position and, because of the protection, i tend to take along on more outings even if photography is not the main objective. to complete the story, i use a wrist strap most of the time, and a 4gb card which cuts down card changing considerably.
if you want the leica grip in black, PM me. good luck with your decision rick |

Until a thief snatches your camera and breaks both fingers. Unlikely I know.

Just as an aside . . . I was in Chesterfield a few years ago taking some pictures of "the Crooked Spire" when this scruffy little urchin offered to take a picture of me standing in front of the spire using my M4. I declined ;-) Last edited by roofus : May 17th, 2008 at 04:54 PM. |

I bought the Leica grip first, since I didn't realize the Luigi case had its own grip built in.
I've used the Luigi case exclusively for two years. I love it and it looks just as it should. The hassle of taking the case off frequently to download the SD card or change batteries is real but to me an acceptable trade off. Luigi makes a classic. Wag |
