Default Zeiss 25 mm Lens Shade

I'm ready to pop for a Zeiss 25mm for my M8. They show 2 lens shades on their website - a square one for the 21/25 mm and a round one for the 25/28mm. Anyone have experience with either one? Seems that the round one is less likely to get in the way of the viewfinder?

Given the narrower field of view on the M8, a hood designed for a 35mm lens will probably be more effective and block less of the finder. On a "DX" format Nikon I can use the 50mm hood on the 28mm f/2 lens, an 85mm hood on a 50mm lens and so on. Next time I get to a lathe I'm going to try fitting the Voigtlander rectangular 21mm hood on their 15mm lens.

Bought both when I got the ZM21/2.8 as I'll be using it on film Ms as well as the M8. On the M8 I only use the round one and have seen no ill effects. I can try one of Heavystars' 46mm wide angle hoods on it when I get home. This one works well on a 35mm on my M6 and a 28mm on the M8.

The 25mm hoods aren't effective on the M8 due to the crop factor which makes the lens a 33mm or so.
I bought a rubber hood for 50mm lens and carefully cut away little by little until it didn't vignet. Very cheap and above all efficient.

Oh. Have I totally misunderstood the point of lens hoods? I thought they were to keep flare-inducing rays out of the camera, not ones that land nicely within the lens' image circle.

For what it's worth, then, I use the round hood with my ZM 25. It seems to work just as the manufacturer intended and it hasn't worried me at all as far as viewfinding is concerned.

Let's be precise. The focal length is 25mm and remains 25mm. The only thing that changes is the field of view. So yes, one can use a more narrow hood. A 35 mm one will be fine.

I wonder if we might adopt this as the motto of this forum?

Either that or "When you mean than don't say then".

I use the rectangular one on my 25 (on the M8 ) and it works like a charm.
