Default The new LFI arrived. Congratulations to William Palank for being featured!

I've always enjoyed William Palank's contributions to the Forum, particularly his excellent photos from India. So I was not so surprised, but very pleased to see his work featured in the newest LFI magazine.

Greetings from Hamburg

Rick

Thanks Rick and Ruben. I haven't seen the article yet but Kirsten (writer) is supposed to send me a PDF on Monday. I guess it's called, "The Third Eye". I hope she's referring to an M8 and not what we called a third eye in my fraternity days.
Here's a link to the teaser on the LFI site:

Indeed, the article is entitled "The Third Eye".

My congratulations too, I've never been to India but I can see what great opportunities there are for image making.

Thank you for the confirmation Mark.

Yeah, I went to the table of contents page at the LFI site and in the upper right you can kind of flip through the issue where I recognized my image and the title of the article. Unfortunately, the text is far to small to read.

Cheers,

LFI made an excellent choice in featuring your work, which I have admired here for quite some time. I get my copy about a week later than most people here for some reason, but am eager to see your photos and read the story. Congratulations!

LFI made a good choice, no doubt.
All pictures they print are really storytelling images, but one of them is my favourite.
This little girl which smiles as you, adoring and a perfect capture too.

Hello William,

I like the colors of your pictures. But please can you tell me why you cut the hands and have too much space over the heads at 6 of 9 pictures?

Thanks.

William - I too enjoy your work, and I love the layout of your web-site. However, there is something that bothers me. In your shoes I would be deeply disturbed by photographing skin-and-bone malnourished people. Indian people are nice, so I thought that on your next trip you might take a 'collection' in India for your undernourished bikini models; so they might get a decent meal inside them.

Thanks smep,
I'm just not formerly trained. If I've given to much headroom, it's a conscious decision. Interestingly enough, most people complain that I shoot to tight. You need to look closer. for example, the bather, there is a bird in the back ground, that adds a triangular geometry to the face and bag. As far as hands, you mean like this?
LFI Gallery - Portrait/Melanie
Just a compositional decisions I guess. to me the far bigger sin is to cut someone off at the waist, neck or knees like this:
LFI Gallery - Portrait/Eliades Ochoa
As far as 6 out of 9, the young girl had her hands rolled up in her jacket and the sadhu has the tip of a finger under a brown thing. I wanted to shoot them as they were. I guess 4 out of 9 ain't bad?

Chris,
Thanks. You are probably referring to Rei who was Miss World Japan at the time. I've never met a nicer young lady. She wolfed down a chicken Caesar right in front of me and asked for extra dressing. Her father was a Yakuza crime boss who was murdered in the same house where she slept at a very young age. She got involved in drugs, yada, yada. Currently she doesn't drink or do drugs. Her decision was to help children (like herself) and enter beauty pageants so she could further her education. She also escorted me on the train to my subway station in Tokyo as she was worried about me. And she being 6'1" in heels.

William, I thought it was because of using a viewfinder camera. If I don´t think when shooting at portrait distance I have to much much space above the head.

I like it more to have the head near the upper end of a picture, I think it adds tension.

At the portrait of Eliades Ochoa I didn´t want to have the door in the background cut.

Stefan

William - As soon as I pressed the 'send' button I thought to myself that maybe I shouldn't have. Bad humour on my part. Sorry.
